5 Arrested in Nepali Student's Death Granted Bail

Five individuals arrested for the forcible eviction of Nepali students from hostels at Odisha's Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) have been granted bail. Those arrested include senior university officials Sibananda Mishra, Pratap Kumar Chamupaty, and Sudhir Kumar Rath, along with two security guards. Their arrests followed protests by Nepali students after the death of fellow student Prakriti Lamsal, who was found dead in her hostel room on February 16, with claims of harassment by another student. As negotiations with protesters broke down, the students were ordered to vacate, leading to allegations of manhandling during the eviction and claims that students were left stranded at Cuttack railway station. Meanwhile, another student, Advik Srivastava, has been arrested for allegedly abetting Lamsal's suicide. The Odisha government has established a high-level committee to investigate the circumstances of her death. sources

Court Upholds Ex-Army Officer's Jail Term for Assault

The Bombay High Court has upheld a five-year prison sentence for a former Lieutenant Colonel convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, rejecting his plea to annul the court martial order. The court highlighted the victim's clear testimony, demonstrating her understanding of inappropriate behavior, particularly after the accused touched her thigh and solicited a kiss shortly after meeting her. The General Court Martial (GCM) found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in March 2021. The High Court dismissed the accused's claims of innocent intent, emphasizing that the victim immediately reported the incident to her father. The bench found no errors in the GCM's findings or in the Armed Forces Tribunal's confirmation of the sentence, stating that the accused's fundamental rights were not violated and that the evidence was properly considered. sources

Final Opportunity to See Planetary Parade Until 2040

A rare celestial event known as a planetary parade is set for its grand finale on February 28, when all seven planets of our solar system will align in the night sky. This phenomenon, described by scientists as infrequent, follows the alignment of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune that occurred between January 21 and 29. The last time all seven planets will align until 2040, this event is characterized by planets gathering closely on one side of the Sun. While they will appear to line up along the ecliptic, their orbits in three-dimensional space prevent a perfect straight line. To observe the parade, stargazers are advised to find dark areas away from city lights; Mars will be visible in the east, with other planets scattered across the sky. Clear weather will allow most planets to be seen with the naked eye, while a telescope may be needed for Neptune and Uranus. sources

Bengaluru Man Wins Lawsuit Against PVR-INOX Over Ads

A 30-year-old man from Bengaluru, Abhishek MR, has been awarded Rs 65,000 in damages after suing PVR Cinemas, INOX, and BookMyShow for wasting 25 minutes of his time with lengthy commercials before a screening of 'Sam Bahadur'. He claimed that after booking tickets for a 4.05 pm show, the film did not start until 4.30 pm due to advertisements, disrupting his schedule and causing "mental agony." The consumer court ruled that the delay constituted unfair trade practices, stating, "time is considered as money." PVR and INOX were ordered to pay Rs 50,000 for the unfair practice, Rs 5,000 for mental distress, and Rs 10,000 for legal costs, alongside a Rs 1 lakh penalty. However, BookMyShow was not held liable as it merely facilitates ticket bookings. The court emphasized that public service announcements should be screened closer to the film's start time, not before. sources

Nadir Godrej Discusses Trump's Tariffs and India's Impact

In New Delhi, the repercussions of Donald Trump’s second term as US President are significantly affecting India, particularly through deportations and tariffs. Over 300 undocumented Indians have been repatriated via military aircraft, while new tariffs of 25% on steel and aluminium are set to challenge Indian exports. Nadir Godrej, Managing Director of Godrej Industries, suggested that while these tariffs may impact some businesses, their overall effect could be limited, as Indian exports to the US represent a small percentage of total business. Trump’s strategy of imposing reciprocal tariffs aims to pressure countries like India, which he has labeled a "big abuser" of US trade. However, Godrej noted that Trump often retracts such threats, hoping for quick negotiations. A report by the State Bank of India indicates that even with increased tariffs, the overall decline in Indian exports to the US may only be around 3-3.5%, suggesting manageable consequences for the Indian economy. sources
