India's October engineering exports to US drop 14.5% due to tariffs

India's engineering goods exports to the US fell by 14.5% year-on-year in October 2025, totaling $1.39 billion, primarily due to reciprocal tariffs and sectoral tariffs on steel and auto parts. The decline was exacerbated by a significant drop in exports of 'aircrafts and spacecraft' and 'ships, boats and floating structures,' which plummeted by over 80%. Overall, engineering exports decreased by 16.71% to $9.37 billion, with 15 of the 25 key markets experiencing negative growth, including a nearly 50% decline in the ASEAN region. The US imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, contributing to the downturn, while exports to the UAE also fell by 19.3%. Despite these challenges, the Engineering Export Promotion Council noted a 1.68% growth in engineering exports for the April-October 2025 period. Exporters are optimistic about the government's ₹25,000 crore Export Promotion Mission aimed at revitalizing the sector. sources

A320 software upgrades cause flight delays

Passengers faced delays on Saturday as domestic airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, undertook mandatory software upgrades on their Airbus A320 family aircraft, following directives from India's aviation safety regulator, the DGCA. The DGCA reported that 200 IndiGo aircraft, 113 Air India aircraft, and 25 Air India Express planes were identified for the upgrades. By Saturday afternoon, over 50% of the necessary updates had been completed, with IndiGo stating that inspections on 160 aircraft were finished by noon IST. Air India reported that its engineers were working tirelessly, having completed over 40% of the required updates. The software changes were prompted by an emergency airworthiness directive from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and were aimed at ensuring the continued safe operation of the aircraft. Despite the delays, no flights were cancelled, and both airlines expressed confidence in meeting the compliance timeline. sources

Did CME screens go blank to save a trader?

Traders in the silver market have dismissed the CME Group's explanation of a "cooling issue" as the cause of a 10-hour trading glitch, alleging it was a tactic to assist a trader facing a significant delivery obligation of nearly 12,450 tonnes of silver. This incident coincided with silver futures reaching a record high of $56.775 an ounce, amid a 95% price surge in 2025. Critics argue that the CME's claim is implausible, given that data centres typically have backup cooling systems. The Silver Academy suggested that the glitch allowed large short position holders to manage their risks without facing catastrophic losses. As the market stabilizes, analysts warn of a looming physical silver shortage, exacerbated by years of supply deficits. The situation is expected to culminate by December 31, 2025, when the true extent of the market's challenges may be revealed. sources

Delhi HC warns Tax Departments against using AI-generated fake judgments

The Delhi High Court has issued a warning to the Tax Department regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in issuing show cause notices, emphasizing the need for caution. A division bench, comprising Justices Prathibha M Singh and Shail Singh, highlighted the "grey area" surrounding the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated data, stating that such tools should only be used for preliminary research. The court found discrepancies in judgments cited by the GST Department, referencing a case that illustrated the potential for AI to produce incorrect or fictional legal information. The ruling stressed that AI cannot replace human judgment in legal matters and urged the Tax Department to verify all AI-generated content before use. Harpreet Singh from Deloitte noted that while AI can aid in evidence analysis, the risks of "AI hallucinations" necessitate thorough verification to avoid citing non-existent judgments in official documents. sources

Crisil boosts GDP growth forecast to 7% this year

India's economic outlook has improved, with Crisil raising its GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 7% from 6.5%, following a robust 8.2% growth in the second quarter. Chief economist Dharmakriti Joshi noted that this growth surpassed expectations, driven primarily by increased private consumption and significant gains in manufacturing and services. Despite a modest nominal GDP growth of 8.7% due to easing inflation, the first half of the year showed strong performance, although a slowdown to 6.1% is anticipated in the second half, influenced by higher US tariffs. Joshi highlighted that lower food inflation has encouraged discretionary spending, and the third quarter is expected to benefit from these trends. Additionally, government investment is likely to stabilize, while private investments may see a delayed increase, supported by GST rationalization and recent interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India. sources

Tariffs hurt India's US exports; GTRI proposes Export Mission

India's exports to the United States, its largest market, have plummeted by 28.5% from May to October 2025, dropping from $8.83 billion to $6.31 billion, largely due to aggressive tariff hikes. The US imposed escalating duties, starting at 10% in April and reaching 50% by late August, making Indian goods among the most heavily taxed of any US trading partner. Key sectors, including gems, textiles, and smartphones, saw significant declines, with smartphone exports alone falling 36% to $1.50 billion. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has called for the Indian government to expedite the Export Promotion Mission, which aims to enhance export competitiveness, particularly for MSMEs and labour-intensive sectors. GTRI also urged the removal of a 25% additional tariff on Indian goods to alleviate the burden on exporters. Without swift action, the initiative risks failing to meet its objectives, as funding remains limited. sources

UP's Surya Ghar: Rooftop Solar Capacity Exceeds 1 GW

In October, the curtailment rate for solar generation in India reached approximately 12%, the highest since May, as Uttar Pradesh celebrated surpassing 1 gigawatt (GW) of residential rooftop solar capacity under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana’ (PMSG: MBY). This milestone, achieved by installing solar panels on 290,000 rooftops, benefits nearly 293,000 families with affordable or free electricity. The state added around 640 megawatts (MW) of capacity in FY25, significantly reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and saving approximately 4,000 acres of land. With over 972,886 applications received, the scheme has created around 50,000 jobs and boosted local economies. Households are saving between ₹800-2,500 monthly on electricity bills, while farmers gain access to affordable daytime electricity, enhancing agricultural productivity and economic stability. Uttar Pradesh now ranks third nationally in rooftop solar capacity, following Gujarat and Maharashtra. sources
