Conflict in Mumbai Complex Over "Dirty" Non-Vegetarians

MUMBAI: Tensions flared in Ghatkopar as Mumbai Police intervened between the Gujarati community and Marathi-speaking residents over non-vegetarian food consumption. The unrest was sparked by allegations that Marathi families were mistreated by residents of an apartment complex for eating meat and fish, with a widely circulated video showing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) members confronting Gujarati residents. MNS leader Raj Parte accused some residents of derogatory remarks and enforcing unwritten restrictions on food choices, insisting that no one should dictate dietary habits in a diverse city like Mumbai. Although one resident denied any such restrictions, the police were called to prevent further escalation, advising residents to coexist peacefully. No formal complaints were lodged. A police officer noted that internal divisions had emerged in the complex following a recent election loss, and discussions would be held to resolve the matter. Both the MNS and Shiv Sena have previously raised concerns about discrimination based on food preferences. sources

Nehru Called Aurangzeb a Bigot and Cruel Ruler

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has emphasized the national heroism of Maharana Pratap and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, contrasting them with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, whom he described as a "bigot" and "cruel ruler." Speaking at the unveiling of a statue of Maharana Pratap in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, Singh criticized post-Independence historians for glorifying Aurangzeb while neglecting the contributions of Pratap and Shivaji. He highlighted Pratap's sacrifices for self-respect and unity among diverse societal groups, including Adivasis and Muslims, during his resistance against Mughal dominance. Singh argued that renaming places associated with Aurangzeb is justified and asserted that glorifying historical figures like Aurangzeb insults Indian Muslims. He reiterated that the BJP promotes equality among all Indians, drawing on ancestral values, amid ongoing political debates regarding Aurangzeb's legacy in Maharashtra. sources

Stargazers worldwide are set for a spectacular sight as a rare triple planetary conjunction will create a "smiley face" in the predawn sky on April 25. This celestial event, involving Venus, Saturn, and a crescent moon, will be visible globally for a brief period before sunrise. The planets will form the "eyes" of the smile, while the crescent moon will represent the "mouth." According to NASA Solar System Ambassador Brenda Culbertson, the alignment will appear as a triangular formation, with Venus higher in the eastern horizon and Saturn positioned lower. The best viewing conditions will be found by looking eastward just one hour before sunrise. This event follows the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower, adding to the night sky's vibrancy. Observers may also spot Mercury below the trio, while binoculars or telescopes can enhance the view of the crescent moon. sources

Anurag Kashyap Apologizes After Controversial Statement on Daughter

Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has ignited controversy with his inflammatory remarks about the Brahmin community, particularly in the wake of backlash surrounding his film 'Phule.' In a lengthy apology, Kashyap clarified that he was not apologizing for his original statement but for the ensuing hatred, emphasizing that no action justifies threats against his loved ones. He urged critics to direct their anger at him rather than his family, asserting, “If you want an apology, here it is. Brahmins, spare the women.” The controversy coincides with the release of 'Phule,' which portrays the lives of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, and has faced objections from Brahmin groups over its content.
