Dense Fog Causes 400+ Flight Delays at Delhi Airport

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport faced significant disruptions on Saturday due to dense fog, resulting in 19 flight diversions, over 400 delays, and more than 45 cancellations. Between 12:15 am and 1:30 am, 19 flights were diverted, including 13 domestic and four international. The low visibility conditions, which persisted from the previous day, prompted the largest airline, IndiGo, to temporarily halt arrivals and departures. The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) noted that while CAT III compliant flights could operate, others might be affected, urging passengers to check with their airlines for updates. Air India also reported that poor visibility impacted operations across northern India. As the fog continued to disrupt visibility in various cities, IndiGo assured customers that efforts were underway to assist those affected and resume normal operations as soon as conditions improved. The airport typically handles around 1,300 flight movements daily. sources

Supreme Court Criticizes Jharkhand Minister's Publicity Seek

The Supreme Court of India has criticized Jharkhand minister Irfan Ansari for allegedly disclosing the identity of a minor rape survivor during a hospital visit in 2018. Justices BV Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma questioned Ansari's motives, suggesting his actions were aimed at gaining publicity rather than providing genuine support, as he arrived with a group of supporters instead of visiting privately. Despite his lawyer arguing there was no direct evidence linking Ansari to the identity disclosure, the court highlighted that legal protocols were not adhered to. In September 2024, the Jharkhand High Court found a prima facie case against him under Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code, leading to his challenge of a Dumka court's decision to frame charges under the IPC and POCSO Act. The minister's petition for dismissal of the prosecution was ultimately rejected by the Supreme Court. sources

AAP Leader Whips Himself at Gujarat Public Meeting

In a dramatic public display, Aam Aadmi Party leader Gopal Italia flogged himself at a meeting in Surat, Gujarat, to express his frustration over the lack of justice for the "innocent daughter of Amreli." In a video, Italia was seen striking himself with a belt while addressing various incidents of injustice in the state, including the Morbi bridge collapse and government exam paper leaks. He lamented his inability to secure justice for victims and hoped his self-punishment would awaken the public's conscience. The incident refers to a 25-year-old woman from Amreli, recently arrested for allegedly attempting to defame BJP MLA Kaushik Vekariya, who was granted bail after her arrest drew significant backlash, particularly after footage showed her being paraded by police. Italia criticized the BJP government for protecting wrongdoers while punishing those simply doing their jobs. sources

Woman and Boyfriend Murdered by Family, Staged as Suicides: Police

A 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were allegedly murdered by her family in a suspected hate crime in Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on New Year's Eve, police reported on Monday. The victims, Mithun Kushwaha and Kamini Sahu, had been in a relationship disapproved by Sahu's family, leading to a panchayat ruling that Kushwaha should leave the village until Sahu's marriage. Despite this, he visited her on New Year's Eve to celebrate her birthday but was caught by her family, who restrained him, forced him to drink poison, and then strangled him. When Sahu protested, her family did the same to her. In an attempt to mislead authorities, they hung Kushwaha's body from a tree and hid Sahu's behind their house. Initial police investigations suggested suicide, but autopsy results confirmed strangulation. Three family members have been arrested, including Sahu's father, mother, and uncle. sources

WHO Ex Chief Scientist: HMPV Not a Cause for Panic

Former WHO chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has reassured the public that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a cause for alarm, describing it as a known virus that typically results in mild respiratory infections. Following the detection of three positive cases in infants in Karnataka and Gujarat, Swaminathan emphasized the importance of standard cold precautions, such as wearing masks and practicing good hygiene. The Indian Council of Medical Research identified the cases through routine surveillance, noting that none of the patients had traveled internationally. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda also sought to alleviate concerns, stating that HMPV is not a new virus and is already circulating globally. First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. The health ministry reported no unusual surge in related illnesses in India. sources

HMPV Concerns Rise; Government Urges Calm, No Lockdown Needed

Three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in India, with two in Bengaluru and one in Ahmedabad, primarily affecting infants, one of whom has since been discharged from hospital care. The Indian government and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) have reassured the public, stating there is no need for panic as HMPV is not a new pathogen and has been circulating globally, including in India. Social media has seen a rise in discussions about potential lockdowns due to fears of an outbreak, drawing parallels to the COVID-19 pandemic that began in late 2019. Medical experts emphasize that HMPV typically causes mild respiratory illnesses and that most of the Indian population has developed immunity. While no specific antiviral treatment exists, supportive care is recommended for managing symptoms. Public health officials encourage preventive measures, including good hygiene practices and maintaining distance from those exhibiting respiratory symptoms. sources

High Court Questions Techie Atul Subhash's Wife on Probe

The Karnataka High Court has denied a plea to cancel the FIR against Nikita Singhania, linked to the suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, who reportedly took his life amid allegations of harassment and a demand for Rs 3 crore for divorce. Justice SR Krishna Kumar stated that the FIR presents sufficient grounds for investigating the case under abetment of suicide, questioning why the investigation should not proceed. Subhash's family claims he faced undue pressure from Singhania and her family, which drove him to suicide. Meanwhile, a Bengaluru court previously granted bail to Singhania and her family, prompting Subhash's relatives to express concerns for the safety of his child, alleging that Singhania could pose a threat. They are now seeking custody of the child, fearing for his well-being following the turmoil surrounding the case. sources

Taj Security Alert: Duplicate Cars Spark Strange Loan Story

A Mumbai cab driver’s attempt to evade car loan recovery by forging his vehicle's registration number led to a security scare at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel on Thursday. Two Maruti Suzuki Ertiga cars with identical yellow number plates prompted concern when one owner spotted the duplicate vehicle. Given the hotel’s history as a target in the 2008 terrorist attacks, police acted swiftly, detaining both cars at the Colaba police station. The driver of the forged vehicle confessed to altering his registration number to avoid loan recovery agents, having struggled with consistent fines and toll evasion charges against his original plate. Despite the alarming circumstances, police confirmed that there was no security breach motive, stating that the driver’s actions were solely to prevent the seizure of his car by financial institutions. A case has since been registered against the owner. sources
