BJP Urges Delhi Lt Governor to Restore "Sheesh Mahal

The Delhi Chief Minister's official residence, "Sheesh Mahal" at 6 Flagstaff Road, faces potential cancellation of its recent merger with four adjacent properties, following a request by the BJP to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. Originally designed as a Type 5 bungalow, it has been controversially upgraded to a Type 8, designated for senior cabinet ministers, with a lavish Rs 33.6 crore renovation that includes luxury amenities such as jacuzzis and gold-plated toilets. The BJP, leveraging this transformation as a political tool, claims that Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party illegally annexed neighboring properties to create this expansive complex, which now spans over 50,000 square meters. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva has formally requested the Lt Governor to annul the merger, and the BJP has indicated that the new Chief Minister will not reside there, with plans to potentially convert the bungalow into a museum. sources

The Middle Class Shaped Delhi's Destiny

In February 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new BJP headquarters in Delhi, where he frequently celebrated electoral victories. Following the BJP's significant win in Delhi, where it increased its seats from eight to 48, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's recent budget announcement transformed middle-class voter sentiment, shifting expectations from pessimism to optimism. Surveys indicated a dramatic change in perceptions, with over 40% of respondents anticipating an improved quality of life post-budget. Despite the BJP's success, AAP secured nearly 44% of the vote share, suggesting continued support among poorer voters. The election highlighted a class divide; while the affluent and middle class largely backed the BJP, the disadvantaged remained loyal to AAP. Though the BJP's victory was substantial, AAP's resilience indicates it still holds significant support among Delhi's electorate, marking a complex political landscape ahead. sources

Why Form Alliances?" Sena Criticizes Congress and AAP

In the wake of the recent Delhi Assembly election, the Congress party's role in the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) defeat has sparked criticism within the opposition bloc INDIA. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy characterized the alliance as "fractured," a sentiment echoed by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who suggested that infighting among opposition parties facilitated the BJP's victory. Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena accused both Congress and AAP of undermining each other, which ultimately benefited the BJP. Despite Congress's failure to secure any seats for the third consecutive election, party leaders expressed satisfaction over AAP's loss, raising concerns within the opposition about potential vote-splitting in future elections, particularly in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress remains wary of Congress's impact in the upcoming state elections, although she reassured her MLAs about their party's strength against the BJP. sources

Could Delhi's Next Chief Minister Be a Woman?

NEW DELHI: Following a decisive victory in the Delhi elections, the BJP has ended the AAP's decade-long rule, securing 48 out of 70 Assembly seats. As speculation mounts over the next Chief Minister, potential candidates include Parvesh Verma, who notably defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, and other party figures such as Satish Upadhyay, Vijender Gupta, Ashish Sood, and Pawan Sharma. Interestingly, the BJP may also consider a woman MLA for the role, with four newly elected female legislators in their ranks. Additionally, caste considerations may influence the decision, as four MLAs belong to the Scheduled Caste category. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party chief JP Nadda are strategizing the government formation, with a grand swearing-in ceremony planned for after Modi's return from the US, aiming to highlight the BJP's significant comeback in the capital. sources
