Supreme Court Petition Demands Tamil Nadu Language Compliance

The language dispute in southern India has escalated to the Supreme Court as a lawyer from Tamil Nadu, GS Mani, has petitioned for the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and its three-language curriculum in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal. Mani argues that the NEP is designed to enhance educational quality for all students, while state governments resist the plan, alleging it imposes Hindi for political reasons. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has criticized the Centre's push for the three-language formula, claiming it threatens the cultural identity of non-Hindi-speaking states and is linked to political motives like delimitation. The BJP supports the policy, asserting it is necessary, while opposition parties and civil society advocate for the existing two-language system of Tamil and English. Tensions heightened after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan warned that Tamil Nadu would not receive funding under the Samagra Shiksha scheme without NEP compliance. sources

Jadavpur University Incident: FIR Against Bengal Minister, Driver

Kolkata Police have registered FIRs against West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, his driver, and Trinamool Congress leader Om Prakash Mishra following a violent incident at Jadavpur University on March 1, where two students were severely injured after allegedly being struck by the minister's vehicle. This action comes a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered the police to act on complaints from the protesting students, rather than solely those from the Trinamool Congress-affiliated West Bengal College & University Professors' Association. The accused face charges including physical assault and threats. Amit Roy, father of one of the injured students, expressed his satisfaction with the judicial intervention, emphasizing the importance of democratic practices in law enforcement. The unrest began when students demanded immediate elections for the university's student council, culminating in a scuffle after Basu's car was stopped on campus. sources

Video: 14-Year-Old Bride Forcibly Taken by Husband

A disturbing video from Hosur, Karnataka, showing a 14-year-old girl being forcibly taken away by a man while others looked on, has sparked outrage and led to the arrest of five adults involved in the incident. The girl, from Thimmathur, was married off to 29-year-old Madesh on March 3, despite her protests against the union. After expressing dissatisfaction post-marriage and refusing to go to her in-laws, she was abducted by Madesh and his brother Mallesh. The incident was recorded by bystanders and shared widely on social media, prompting a police investigation initiated by a complaint from the girl’s grandmother. Child marriage remains a significant issue in India, with 180 cases reported in Karnataka alone in the past year. sources

Omar Abdullah Questions Who Blocks PoK's Return

Srinagar's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the BJP-led central government for its decision to divide Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, arguing it undermines the legacy of Maharaja Hari Singh, who unified the region. Abdullah questioned External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's recent comments about reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, asking why the BJP has not acted on this promise, especially during the Kargil War. He also highlighted that both Pakistan and China occupy parts of Indian territory and called for a broader discussion on these issues. Jaishankar, during a visit to the UK, defended the government's actions, including the abrogation of Article 370, claiming it has led to economic growth and high electoral turnout in Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that the division of Jammu and Kashmir has not been well-received, particularly in Kargil, and noted that historical names in the region remain unchanged, reflecting the Maharaja's legacy. sources

Assam Assembly Erupts Over Minister's "Miya" Remarks

The use of the derogatory term "Miya" for Muslims ignited controversy in the Assam assembly, prompting the Opposition AIUDF to seek a breach of privilege motion against Health Minister Ashok Singhal. The motion was proposed by AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam after Singhal allegedly suggested that Bengali-speaking Muslims would be excluded from government benefits during a recent event in Dhekiajuli. Reports indicated that Singhal urged attendees not to permit "miyas" to set up shops. Islam called for Singhal's dismissal or an apology for his remarks, asserting that the minister's comments reflect a broader disdain for the community. Speaker Biswajit Daimary, while expressing sympathy for the affected community, rejected the motion, leading to a 20-minute adjournment as protests continued. The BJP defended Singhal's comments, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that deemed such language inappropriate yet not legally offensive. sources

Painkiller May Help Prevent Cancer Spread, Study Finds

In a significant development, researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered that aspirin may help prevent the spread of certain cancers by inhibiting metastasis. This breakthrough suggests that aspirin could enhance the immune system's capability to identify and eliminate cancer cells, potentially offering an affordable treatment option. Dr Jie Yang described the findings as a "Eureka moment," highlighting their importance in understanding aspirin's anti-metastatic properties. Professor Rahul Roychoudhuri noted that aspirin could be particularly effective for early-stage cancers, possibly used alongside traditional treatments. However, experts caution against self-medication, urging patients to consider participation in clinical trials instead. Despite the promising results, there are risks associated with aspirin, such as internal bleeding, and it remains unclear whether its benefits apply to all cancer types. Ongoing research is essential to determine its safety and efficacy for broader patient use. sources
