NEET-UG Counselling Starts in July, No Retest: Centre

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that a retest for the NEET-UG medical entrance exam will not be conducted, citing the burden it would place on nearly 24 lakh students who appeared for the exam on May 5. The government's affidavit stated that a technical analysis by experts from IIT Madras found no evidence of mass malpractice or localized benefits to specific candidates. The Centre plans to begin the counselling process in the third week of July in four phases, with the possibility of cancelling counselling for any candidate found to have benefited from irregularities. While some petitioners have called for a retest due to alleged irregularities, others have opposed it. The Centre also proposed a seven-member expert panel to address issues raised and prevent future leaks or irregularities in exams. sources

Human Evolution in Tibet's High Altitudes

A recent study highlights the remarkable evolutionary adaptations of Tibetan communities to the hypoxic conditions of the Tibetan Plateau, revealing how humans continue to evolve in extreme environments. Conducted by Cynthia Beall, a University Professor Emerita at Case Western Reserve University, the research, published in the _Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences_, demonstrates that Tibetan women possess unique physiological traits that enhance their reproductive success in low-oxygen conditions. The study found that these women exhibit lower hemoglobin concentrations, higher oxygen saturation, and increased uterine artery blood flow, leading to heavier newborns. Notably, among women who have completed childbearing, those with optimal oxygen transport traits achieved higher reproductive success. Beall emphasized the significance of these findings, stating that they illustrate natural selection's role in shaping human variation in response to environmental stressors, underscoring the complexity and adaptability of our species. sources

Udhayanidhi Stalin Stands Firm on 'Sanatan Dharma' Comment

Udhayanidhi Stalin, Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister, has affirmed he will not apologise for his controversial remarks on 'Sanatan Dharma', which he previously likened to "mosquitos causing malaria." Speaking in Dindigul, he defended his statements as part of a legacy initiated by Dravidian leaders like Periyar, who championed women's empowerment and education. He asserted that misinterpretations of his comments have led to legal actions across India, but he remains resolute, stating, "I am Karunanidhi's grandson and will not apologise." His legal team contends that his remarks reflect the historical context of caste discrimination associated with 'Sanatan Dharma' in southern India, emphasizing that there was no intention to offend Hindu sentiments. Additionally, Udhayanidhi criticized Governor RN Ravi for omitting the term 'Dravida' from the Tamil Nadu anthem at a recent event. His elevation to Deputy Chief Minister has sparked accusations of nepotism, which the ruling DMK party refutes, insisting on his democratic election. sources
