The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that a retest for the NEET-UG medical entrance exam will not be conducted, citing the burden it would place on nearly 24 lakh students who appeared for the exam on May 5. The government's affidavit stated that a technical analysis by experts from IIT Madras found no evidence of mass malpractice or localized benefits to specific candidates. The Centre plans to begin the counselling process in the third week of July in four phases, with the possibility of cancelling counselling for any candidate found to have benefited from irregularities. While some petitioners have called for a retest due to alleged irregularities, others have opposed it. The Centre also proposed a seven-member expert panel to address issues raised and prevent future leaks or irregularities in exams.
