Video Tour of Jagan Reddy's 'Sheeshmahal' in Andhra Pradesh

In Hyderabad, the opulence of a newly constructed mansion for former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, dubbed Andhra's "Sheeshmahal," is drawing criticism and scrutiny, particularly in light of its staggering cost exceeding Rs 500 crore. Spanning 10 acres on Rushikonda hill, the mansion features extravagant interiors with gold embellishments and luxurious furnishings, raising questions about its intended use. Initially proposed as a camp office, the project has faced allegations of environmental violations, including the demolition of part of Rushikonda hill. The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is now debating the building's future, with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu emphasizing the need for public discussion on its existence and potential revenue generation. N Sitharaman Criticizes DMK's Rupee Move as Secessionist

In a heated political clash, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the DMK's decision to replace the official rupee symbol '₹' with the Tamil letter 'Ru' in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26 documents. She described the move as indicative of a "dangerous mindset" that undermines national unity and promotes regional chauvinism, questioning why the DMK had not protested the rupee symbol's adoption back in 2010 when they were part of the ruling alliance. Sitharaman emphasized the rupee symbol's significance in global financial transactions and accused the DMK of disregarding the contributions of Tamil youth. In response, DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai defended the change as a prioritization of Tamil language and culture, amid ongoing tensions over the Centre's three-language policy and concerns about political dominance from the north. The controversy continues to escalate as the DMK and BJP trade barbs in an election year. sources

World's Most Polluted City Isn't Delhi

Byrnihat, a small city on the Meghalaya-Assam border, has been identified as the most polluted city in the world, according to IQAir's 2024 World Air Quality Report. The report reveals that Byrnihat's annual average PM2.5 concentration stands at 128.2 micrograms per cubic metre, significantly exceeding the World Health Organization's limit of 5 micrograms. This industrial hub, which includes distilleries and iron and steel plants, is connected to Shillong and Guwahati. Following Byrnihat, Delhi, Karaganda, Lahore, and Faridabad rank among the most polluted cities. Although India saw a 7% decline in PM2.5 levels in 2024, it remains the fifth most polluted country, with numerous cities exceeding WHO limits. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma noted that pollution sources may primarily originate from Assam and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to improve air quality. He has reached out to Assam's Chief Minister to address the issue. sources

HYDERABAD: In a bold protest against the Telangana government's alleged freezing of advertisements, the Urdu daily Munsif Daily has published a blank editorial, likening the situation to the Emergency era under Indira Gandhi in the 1970s. Munsif Daily's Executive Editor Ather Moin stated that the publication will not mislead readers about the state’s conditions, emphasizing the ongoing struggles faced by the poor. The Congress party defended its actions, asserting that it is within its rights to decide on advertisement spending. Munsif also pointed to Rahul Gandhi's remarks on press freedom, criticizing the government for stifling dissent, and drawing parallels to historical attempts to silence the media. sources

Annamalai's 'Stupid' Remark at DMK Over Rupee Issue

In a heated exchange, BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai criticized the ruling DMK for replacing the rupee symbol in its budget promotional materials with the Tamil letter 'Ru'. He argued that the DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, is unaware that the rupee symbol was designed by Udaya Kumar, son of a former DMK MLA, and claimed this action disrespects Tamil culture. Annamalai emphasized that while 'Ru' is commonly used in Tamil, it should not replace the nationally accepted rupee symbol. He accused the DMK of escalating a "language war" against the central government, particularly regarding the contentious National Education Policy, which the DMK argues imposes Hindi on Tamil Nadu. In response, DMK leaders defended their decision as a promotion of Tamil, asserting that there is nothing illegal about it and dismissing the BJP's claims as unfounded. sources
