BCG: India's Exports at Risk from Climate Inaction Regulations

India's export-driven sectors, particularly aluminium, iron, and steel, are increasingly vulnerable to climate-related risks that threaten their profitability and long-term sustainability, according to a report by global consulting firm BCG. The 'Climate Risk Index 2026' highlights India as one of the top ten countries most affected by extreme weather, with potential GDP erosion of 4.5% by 2030 due to climate-induced events. BCG's estimates suggest that direct climate risks could jeopardize 5% to 25% of global businesses' EBITDA by 2050. The EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) could impact approximately $7.7 billion, or 10-11%, of India's exports to the EU. While many Indian companies are beginning to recognize the climate challenge, with one-third prioritizing climate strategy, a significant portion still lacks adequate risk assessments. The failure of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to adapt to climate risks could disrupt supply chains, affecting large corporates that rely heavily on them. sources

Rice exporters prepare for changes as India enforces food rules

India's rice export landscape is undergoing significant transformation as the government tightens food security measures to ensure domestic availability. In the fiscal year 2024-25, India exported 20.1 million tonnes of rice worth $12.95 billion, solidifying its position as the world's largest rice supplier. However, export restrictions, changing regulations, and price controls are reshaping trade dynamics. The government's focus on food security is driven by unpredictable weather, rising domestic consumption, and inflation, necessitating careful stock management. Consequently, measures such as export bans on non-basmati rice and the implementation of Minimum Export Prices (MEPs) have created uncertainty for exporters, particularly small and medium-sized businesses. Global importers are adapting by diversifying their sourcing strategies, turning to suppliers in Thailand and Vietnam. As India balances domestic needs with its global market role, exporters must navigate a complex regulatory environment to remain competitive. sources

MNRE suggests increased solar cell efficiency for ALMM eligibility

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has proposed an increase in solar cell efficiency standards to enhance the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules in India. Effective January 1, 2027, the efficiency threshold will rise by 1 percentage point, followed by an additional 0.5 percentage point increase on January 1, 2028. This initiative aims to reflect advancements in solar technology and to exclude low-efficiency and outdated technologies from the Approved List of Modules and Manufacturers (ALMM), which is essential for selling solar products in India. The proposal outlines specific efficiency targets for four categories of solar cells, including utility-scale and rooftop solar. For instance, the efficiency requirement for crystalline silicon cells will increase from 20% to 21%. The MNRE emphasizes that current modules will be removed from the ALMM once the new standards are implemented, aligning with the industry's shift towards higher efficiency technologies. sources

India's October engineering exports to US drop 14.5% due to tariffs

India's engineering goods exports to the US fell by 14.5% year-on-year in October 2025, totaling $1.39 billion, primarily due to reciprocal tariffs and sectoral tariffs on steel and auto parts. The decline was exacerbated by a significant drop in exports of 'aircrafts and spacecraft' and 'ships, boats and floating structures,' which plummeted by over 80%. Overall, engineering exports decreased by 16.71% to $9.37 billion, with 15 of the 25 key markets experiencing negative growth, including a nearly 50% decline in the ASEAN region. The US imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, contributing to the downturn, while exports to the UAE also fell by 19.3%. Despite these challenges, the Engineering Export Promotion Council noted a 1.68% growth in engineering exports for the April-October 2025 period. Exporters are optimistic about the government's ₹25,000 crore Export Promotion Mission aimed at revitalizing the sector. sources
