Canada, India commit to expanding oil and petroleum trade

Canada and India are set to enhance their energy trade ties, marking a significant step in their diplomatic relationship following recent tensions. During a meeting at India Energy Week in Goa, Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced plans for Canada to increase exports of crude oil, liquefied natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas to India, while India will supply more refined petroleum products to Canada. This renewed collaboration aims to revive a previously dormant ministerial energy dialogue, which had stalled amid a dispute over the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist. Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is keen to diversify Canada's export markets, particularly in energy, as trade tensions with the US escalate. The two nations will also explore investments in hydrogen, biofuels, and critical minerals, highlighting the strategic value of their energy partnership. Carney is expected to visit India soon to further these discussions. sources

Cold snap hits N-W India amid wet weather from US

A significant cold tongue from a western disturbance is currently affecting Afghanistan and Pakistan, with its influence extending into Peninsular India, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This weather pattern coincides with severe Arctic blasts impacting 20 states in the US, disrupting daily life. The western disturbances, linked to the jet stream, are responsible for bringing moisture and cold air, resulting in rain, hail, and thunderstorms across North-West and Central India. The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, and Uttarakhand, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds in several northern states. Cold wave conditions are expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab, while dense fog may blanket parts of North-West and East India. The interplay of moisture and cold air from these disturbances continues to shape the winter weather across the region. sources

India halts annual clean energy tender target setting, official states

India's government has announced it will cease setting annual targets for clean energy tenders, following a significant shortfall in last year's goals and a backlog of projects lacking buyers. Currently, developers hold rights to approximately 43 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity without secured customers, as state utilities delay purchases, anticipating price drops and facing transmission infrastructure uncertainties. Santosh Kumar Sarangi, a senior official in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, indicated that less than half of the unsold capacity might be cancelled, and new tenders will be issued based on demand assessments from state utilities. Despite the slowdown, India aims to achieve its target of 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030, having added 38 gigawatts in 2025. The government is also considering restructuring renewable energy implementation agencies, potentially consolidating roles under the Solar Energy Corporation of India. sources
