May 31 2025, 6 pmeznews.inBasmati rice exporters have reported sustained earnings in the marketing year beginning October 2024, driven by increased export volumes despite a significant decline in contracted rates and the absence of a minimum export price (MEP). Trade data reveals that the average export price for basmati fell over 23% in May to $831 per tonne, down from $1,080 a year prior. The season commenced with a 20% price drop, and prices have continued to decline by 15% over the past eight months. Experts, including trade policy analyst S Chandrasekaran, emphasize the need for a reassessment of basmati export standards to enhance quality and authenticity. While last year's high demand due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict boosted prices, this year's robust buying has not translated into higher prices, attributed to a bumper kharif output. Official figures indicate a 16% rise in export volume to 3.99 million tonnes during the period.
