Air India: Safety checks on 9 Boeing 787s may delay flights

In response to the recent fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 in Ahmedabad, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated enhanced safety checks across the airline's fleet. Air India announced on Saturday that it has completed one-time safety inspections on nine of its 33 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and is on track to finish checks on the remaining 24 aircraft as per the regulator's directive. The airline cautioned that these checks may result in longer turnaround times and potential delays on certain long-haul routes, particularly those affected by airport curfews. Air India emphasized that customers will be informed of any delays as the checks are conducted on the aircraft returning to India before they are cleared for future operations. sources

City gas distribution to meet one-third of India's gas demand by 2030

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has highlighted the rapid expansion of compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (D-PNG) infrastructure as a key driver of growth in India's natural gas sector. By 2030, the city gas distribution (CGD) sector is projected to become the largest consumer of natural gas, accounting for nearly one-third of total consumption. The PNGRB's report anticipates that CGD will represent 29% of total consumption by 2030 and 44% by 2040, with significant demand increases expected in both the industrial and commercial segments. The report outlines two growth scenarios, with the CGD segment growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12%. Additionally, the report notes that LNG prices below $9 per million British thermal units could further stimulate demand, as consumers increasingly shift towards cleaner and more affordable fuel options. sources

Air India, Express retire flight number '171' after crash

In the wake of a tragic crash involving Air India's flight 'AI 171', which resulted in the deaths of 241 people shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, the airline has announced it will discontinue the flight number. Effective June 17, the route will now operate under the new designation 'AI 159'. This decision aligns with industry practices following fatal accidents, as airlines often retire specific flight numbers out of respect for the victims. Air India Express will also retire its flight number 'IX 171' in a similar gesture. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash occurred on June 12, and the remnants of the aircraft were found in a residential area near the airport. This is not the first instance of Air India discontinuing a flight number after a disaster; a similar action was taken in 2020 following a crash in Kozhikode. sources

Singapore vessel towed offshore as firefighting efforts persist

A firefighting operation is underway aboard the Singapore-flagged cargo ship MV Wan Hai 503, which caught fire earlier this week while en route from Colombo to Mumbai. On Saturday, the vessel was towed 40 nautical miles away from the Kerala coast, an increase from its previous distance of 27 nautical miles. The towing operation, initiated by a Seaking helicopter from the Southern Naval Command, involved transferring tow cables from Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships to tug vessels, with operations hampered by heavy weather limiting towing speed to 1.5 knots. ICG ships Saksham, Samarth, Vikram, and IN Ship Sharda, along with OSV Triton Liberty, are escorting the towing vessels. The fire, which was sparked by an explosion in one of the containers, has seen 40 percent contained, with 18 of the 22 crew members rescued, while four remain missing. Firefighting efforts continue. sources
