Commemorative Coin for Rani Channamma's 200th Victory Anniversary

The Indian government is set to release a commemorative ₹200 coin to mark the 200th anniversary of Rani Channamma's victory at Kittur, a significant early resistance against the British East India Company predating the 1857 mutiny. While these coins are legal tender, they will not be circulated widely and can be obtained through designated agencies. The circular coins will measure 44 millimeters in diameter, feature 200 serrations, and be made from a quaternary alloy of silver, copper, nickel, and zinc. The obverse will display the Ashoka Pillar's lion capital, while the reverse will depict Rani Channamma, alongside inscriptions commemorating her legacy and the years 1824 and 2024. Rani Channamma, born in 1778, became queen after marrying Raja Mallasarja and led her kingdom in battle against British encroachment following her son's adoption, ultimately facing defeat and imprisonment before her death in 1829. sources

Low Pressure in TN May Bring Heavy Rain

A low-pressure area over interior Tamil Nadu has weakened but continues to pose a risk of heavy rainfall across several regions, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While satellite imagery indicates a reduction in heavy rain over Tamil Nadu, the system is still expected to generate significant precipitation in coastal and South Interior Karnataka, as well as Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema. Light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy showers, is anticipated in Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow, with a fresh low-pressure system expected to develop over the south-west Bay of Bengal by Sunday. Additionally, heavy rain is forecast for South Interior Karnataka and Kerala for two days, and for Coastal Karnataka and Telangana over three days, with extended rainfall expected in other regions for up to a week. sources

TN, AP must prepare for South China Sea storms

Typhoon Fengshen has crossed the Vietnamese coast and weakened into a depression, potentially setting the stage for a new low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) predict the development of a significant storm off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh within the next few days. The IMD forecasts a rare scenario with two preparatory circulations forming along an elongated trough across the Bay, which could evolve into individual storms targeting the Tamil Nadu and north Andhra Pradesh coasts. Meanwhile, the ECMWF anticipates a single consolidated storm emerging near these coasts by October 27. Additionally, a separate depression in the Arabian Sea may strengthen further away from Gujarat and Mumbai, raising concerns for coastal regions as they brace for potential severe weather. sources

Indonesia's biodiesel mandate boosts global palm oil prices

India's palm oil imports from Malaysia surged to an 11-month high of 312,000 tonnes in September, contributing to tighter global vegetable oil supplies. Prices for palm oil are currently above MYR 4,400 per tonne, bolstered by Indonesia's potential B50 biodiesel mandate and declining soybean oil exports from major producers like the US, Brazil, and Argentina. The Malaysian Palm Oil Council reported a 7.7% month-on-month increase in Malaysia's palm oil exports, reaching 1.42 million tonnes, with significant gains in shipments to India, the world's largest edible oil importer. Despite a rise in palm oil inventories to 2.36 million tonnes, domestic consumption has normalised after a record output in August. Analysts predict sustained upward pressure on cooking oil prices into 2026, as global vegetable oil supplies remain constrained, with cautious market sentiment amid high inventories and geopolitical tensions. sources

Airbus negotiating Wizz Air to delay 100 plane deliveries

Wizz Air Holdings Plc is negotiating to defer the delivery of approximately 100 Airbus SE aircraft into the next decade, as the low-cost airline seeks to scale back its rapid expansion amid rising costs and investor concerns. Originally scheduled for delivery between now and 2030, these aircraft deferrals could represent over a third of Wizz's planned deliveries, with Chief Financial Officer Ian Malin indicating that a deal with Airbus is nearing completion. The Hungary-based airline is also curtailing operations in the Middle East and South Asia, having recently closed its Abu Dhabi unit and planning to shut its Vienna base by March. Wizz's shares have fallen by about 21% this year, partly due to maintenance issues with its Airbus A320 family jets. The airline aims for a fleet of 500 planes by fiscal year 2032, two years later than previously anticipated, with potential capacity growth adjustments as a result of the deferrals. sources

Northeast Monsoon floods 16,000 hectares in Tamil Nadu

On October 22, 2025, Tamil Nadu Minister MRK Panneerselvam reported that 16,000 hectares of farmland have been flooded due to the ongoing northeast monsoon, with compensation promised for areas where crop damage exceeds 33 percent. He criticized the previous AIADMK government for poor paddy storage practices, asserting that the current administration is ensuring better management and has significantly increased paddy procurement. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin confirmed that heavy rainfall is affecting Chennai and surrounding districts, with forecasts suggesting that conditions may worsen in the coming days. During a review meeting, he emphasized the need for preparedness as the state braces for potentially heavier rains than last year. The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is contributing to the torrential downpours across Tamil Nadu. sources

Pulses procurement delayed; 9 lakh tonnes sold below MSP

The procurement of oilseeds and pulses at minimum support prices (MSPs) has yet to commence, despite government approval a month ago, primarily due to high moisture content, affecting farmers who have sold over 9 lakh tonnes of key crops since September 24. The Centre has sanctioned the procurement of tur, urad, moong, groundnut, soybean, and sesame in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 13,890 crore. While groundnut purchases in Gujarat are expected to begin next week, requests from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan for procurement are still pending. Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister announced the implementation of the Bhavantar Yojana for soybean, aimed at compensating farmers for price differences. Current mandi prices for these crops are significantly below MSP, raising concerns about farmers' earnings. The Centre has set procurement caps for various crops, with Nafed and other agencies tasked with managing the process. sources

Indonesia may soon lift ban on Indian groundnut imports

An Indonesian delegation is set to visit India at the end of October to address the suspension of Indian groundnut imports, which was enacted on September 3 due to concerns over aflatoxin contamination. The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) confirmed that Indonesia has responded to India's outreach regarding the issue. Trade analysts anticipate that the visit will lead to the resumption of imports, contingent on the delegation's satisfaction with Indian export processes. Exporters have raised concerns about Indonesia's delayed notification of aflatoxin issues and its testing standards, which they argue do not align with World Trade Organization guidelines. Indonesia is a significant market for Indian groundnuts, accounting for a third of exports, and the suspension could cost India approximately ₹410 crore ($46.65 million) in lost revenue. As the kharif harvest begins, Indian exporters are eager to resume shipments amid ongoing challenges in agricultural export markets. sources
