Delhi Airport flight operations disrupted by navigation system issue

Flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) faced significant disruptions on Friday morning due to a technical glitch in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), a vital component for Air Traffic Control (ATC) data. The malfunction resulted in a drastic reduction in departures, with only 10 to 15 flights taking off per hour by 10 a.m., compared to the usual 60. This led to extensive delays and congestion for both domestic and international flights, causing a backlog of aircraft on the ground and longer waiting times for passengers. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that controllers were manually processing flight plans while technical teams worked to restore the system. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) also acknowledged the issue, urging passengers to stay updated with their airlines and expressing regret for the inconvenience caused. sources

IMD predicts weak North-East monsoon this week

Satellite imagery from Friday revealed that rain clouds were primarily concentrated over the extreme south-eastern peninsula and north-western regions of Sri Lanka. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a weak phase for the north-east monsoon over the South Peninsula this week, with light to moderate rainfall expected from November 13-19, particularly in southern Tamil Nadu and adjacent Kerala. Despite an active South China Sea and West Pacific, the US Climate Forecast System anticipates a gradual end to the dry spell by December 6, potentially bringing normal to above-normal rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Tamil Nadu for a few more days, with similar conditions forecasted for Kerala. Additionally, remnants of the recently weakened Typhoon Kalmaegi may enter the Bay of Bengal, potentially influencing weather patterns in southern Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. sources

India's vehicle sales hit record high; strong outlook ahead

During the recent 42-day festival season, encompassing Dussehra and Diwali, India's retail sales surged by 21% year-on-year, driven by a notable 22% increase in two-wheeler sales and a 23% rise in passenger vehicle sales. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported a remarkable 40.5% year-on-year jump in overall vehicle sales for October, marking a record high, largely attributed to tax cuts and robust demand from rural areas. Notably, car sales in rural regions grew three times faster than in urban areas, while two-wheeler sales doubled that rate. Looking ahead, 64% of dealers anticipate continued sales growth in November, buoyed by the marriage season, harvest cash flows, and new vehicle launches. The October figures represent the first sales data following the implementation of goods and services tax (GST) cuts on September 22. sources

Tamil Nadu pays ₹856 crore to landowners for airport site

The Tamil Nadu government has acquired over 1,100 acres of land for the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport in Kancheepuram district, part of a larger 5,746-acre project aimed at establishing Chennai's second airport. The state has allocated ₹856 crore to compensate 1,155 landowners, with 557 being local residents. Announced three years ago, the ₹27,400-crore project received in-principle approval from the Civil Aviation Ministry in April 2023. The airport, designed to accommodate 10 crore passengers annually, will feature two runways, terminal buildings, and a cargo terminal. However, protests from Eganapuram villagers, who fear for their livelihoods, have led the government to reconsider land acquisition in the area. Currently, Chennai's existing airport serves over 2.2 crore passengers each year, with ongoing upgrades expected to increase its capacity to 3.5 crore annually for the next seven years. sources
