Apr 14 2025, 9 pmeznews.inIndia achieved a historic milestone in power capacity addition during the financial year 2025, adding over 34,000 megawatts (MW), the highest in nine years, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). This record includes approximately 29,520 MW from renewable energy sources (RES), bringing the total installed renewable capacity to 220.10 gigawatts (GW). Solar energy led the charge, contributing 23.83 GW, significantly up from 15.03 GW the previous year, while wind energy added 4.15 GW, surpassing the 50 GW mark. Key states for solar installations included Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, while Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra dominated wind energy. Despite this progress, challenges remain, with expectations for solar installations in FY26 to be constrained by excess generation and reluctance from distribution companies to sign power purchase agreements. Wind energy is projected to continue its growth, adding 5.5-6 GW as focus shifts to complex projects for reliable power supply.

Apr 14 2025, 7 pmeznews.inIn a recent social media post, US President Donald Trump reiterated that no country, particularly China, would escape accountability for unfair trade practices and non-monetary tariff barriers. Amidst this backdrop, India is positioning itself advantageously in negotiations with the US, having initiated discussions on a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) as early as February. With a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, India hopes to secure a carve-out by offering tariff cuts and advancing BTA negotiations. While Trump imposed significant tariffs on various countries, India faced a 26% levy, considerably lower than those imposed on rivals like Vietnam and Bangladesh. As the US negotiating team prioritizes India, officials anticipate that India will propose further tariff reductions within the next three months, potentially delaying reciprocal tariffs until the BTA is finalized. Trump's recent comments suggest that tariff exemptions for certain electronics do not signify leniency towards unfair trade practices.

Apr 14 2025, 8 pmeznews.inIndian coffee, particularly shade-grown varieties, may benefit under the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), according to Rajesh Patel, co-founder and CEO of sustainability platform Snowkap. He highlighted that shade-grown coffee, primarily from southern India, does not contribute to deforestation, presenting an opportunity for recognition within the EUDR framework. As the regulation is set to take effect for large companies in December 2023 and for smaller firms by mid-2026, many businesses are already assessing their supply chains for compliance. Patel noted that challenges include the need for precise geo-data and documentation, as well as training across the value chain. He emphasized the importance of sustainability in global trade, stating that companies must adapt to these changes, which could also enhance efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Snowkap is leveraging AI to assist clients in measuring and managing their carbon footprints, while also exploring opportunities in the voluntary carbon market.

Apr 14 2025, 8 pmeznews.inE-way bill generation in India surged by over 20% in March, surpassing ₹12 crore for the first time since its introduction in 2018, reflecting heightened business activity as companies rushed to close their financial year. Experts attribute this increase to improved compliance, with more businesses formally reporting transactions, alongside the natural year-end push to clear inventories. Amit Baid from BTG Advaya noted that better compliance lays the groundwork for sustainable revenue growth, while Sudipta Bhattacharjee from Khaitan & Co highlighted the role of enhanced enforcement against GST fraud in boosting compliance levels. The upcoming GST collection data for April, traditionally a record-setting month, is expected to correlate positively with the rise in e-way bills. However, analysts caution that the sustainability of this growth may be challenged by global economic uncertainties affecting consumer spending.

Apr 14 2025, 7 pmeznews.inThe recent surge in international coffee prices has significantly affected the premiums for speciality coffees, which are typically sold at a fixed price above standard coffee rates. Traditionally, Indian speciality coffees commanded a premium of up to 25%, but this year, growers report that this has plummeted to around 10% due to record-high prices for normal coffee. D. M. Purnesh, President of the Speciality Coffee Association of India, noted that the decline in premiums is a direct result of the soaring prices of regular coffee. Speciality coffees, distinguished by their high quality, unique origins, and meticulous cultivation practices, account for an estimated 5% of India's total coffee production. Despite the challenges, India remains the seventh-largest coffee producer globally, with overall coffee exports reaching a record $1.8 billion, driven by rising global prices amid supply issues from major producers like Brazil and Vietnam.

Apr 14 2025, 7 pmeznews.inOn Monday, the three-month copper contract on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was quoted at $9,238 a tonne, having peaked at $9,271.5 earlier in the day. Analysts predict subdued demand for copper due to the ongoing US-China trade war and challenges in the Chinese property sector, which could hinder any bullish trends for the metal. Despite a nearly 15% gain since the start of 2025, copper prices have dropped 7.5% month-on-month. Research agency BMI has revised its 2025 average price forecast down to $9,500 per tonne, citing concerns over global growth and escalating tariffs. While some analysts expect prices to rise due to demand for low-emission technologies and urbanization, uncertainty remains high, particularly regarding potential US tariffs and China's economic stimulus measures. The outlook suggests that while prices may stabilize, challenges to demand will persist as Chinese GDP growth slows.
