Speaking at the 30th CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam, she noted that India's exports during the first half of 2025 reached an estimated $413.30 billion, reflecting a 4.45% increase from the previous year. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the importance of both bilateral trade agreements and a robust multilateral trading system, urging India to take a leading role in WTO reforms to better support developing nations. She pointed to the WTO's AEM C14 initiative, which aims to enhance global trade resilience, particularly in supply chain diversification, digital trade, and green trade, areas where India can significantly benefit. The WTO chief underscored the need for reforms to address the evolving needs of its members, particularly concerning public stockholding.

Published: Nov 15 2025, 12 pmeznews.inIndia is grappling with a significant municipal waste crisis, generating an average of 170,338 tonnes of solid waste daily, with only 91,512 tonnes treated, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The country is burdened by 87 million tonnes of legacy waste at 1,356 dumping sites, which emit methane and contaminate vital resources. Landfill remediation, a scientifically driven process compliant with existing regulations, offers a solution by transforming these environmental liabilities into recoverable resources. This involves thorough assessments of soil and water quality, followed by the stabilization and segregation of waste for recycling or conversion into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF). While initiatives are underway, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and public awareness hinder progress. A robust policy framework is essential to expedite remediation efforts, aligning with India's Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 and advancing towards a sustainable, resource-efficient future.
Published: Nov 15 2025, 10 ameznews.inIndia's gems and jewellery sector faced a significant downturn in October 2025, with exports plummeting by 30.57% to $2.17 billion, while imports fell 19.2% to $1.28 billion, according to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). This decline is attributed to weakened global demand, high interest rates, supply chain disruptions, and the impact of steep US tariffs. Colin Shah, Managing Director of Kama Jewellery, noted that these tariffs have increased costs and reduced consumer purchases. The GJEPC highlighted that major markets, including the US, Europe, and China, are experiencing slower economic growth, further dampening demand. Notably, exports of cut and polished diamonds dropped 26.97%, while imports fell 35.76%. Despite the overall decline, gold jewellery exports rose 11.9% in the April-October period, buoyed by higher gold prices, while silver jewellery exports also saw an increase.
Published: Nov 15 2025, 10 ameznews.inIn Punjab, India, farmer Surender Singh's experience highlights the ongoing challenge of stubble burning, a common practice among farmers facing tight deadlines between paddy harvest and wheat sowing. With limited resources, Singh turned to a small stubble shaver, which efficiently mulched crop residue into the soil, promoting sustainable farming and improving soil moisture. This method contrasts sharply with the harmful effects of stubble burning, which depletes soil health and contributes to air pollution. Despite the benefits of small-scale mechanization, adoption remains low due to policies favoring larger, expensive machinery. Experts advocate for targeted support for affordable tools and innovative practices like Direct Dry Seeded Rice (DDSR), which can ease time pressures and reduce environmental impact. Addressing the root causes of stubble burning through practical, localized solutions is essential for fostering sustainable agriculture and improving the livelihoods of the majority of Indian farmers who operate on small plots.
Published: Nov 15 2025, 9 ameznews.inWorld Trade Organization (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has emphasized the need for climate measures to avoid appearing protectionist, amid growing global concerns over trade tools like carbon pricing. Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry event in Visakhapatnam, she acknowledged the unprecedented disruption in global trade, the worst in 80 years, while highlighting India's potential as a key beneficiary as nations reconsider reliance on single markets. Okonjo-Iweala noted the existence of 113 carbon pricing schemes worldwide, which complicate export processes, and called for greater coherence between trade and environmental policies. With the EU planning to implement a carbon tax on imports by 2026, India has expressed resistance. Despite current challenges, she pointed out that 72% of global trade still operates under WTO rules and underscored the transformative potential of digitalization and AI for developing countries, projecting a 40% increase in global trade by 2040 if AI is adopted equitably.
