The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) is set to sign a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Open Network Digital Commerce (ONDC) this week, aimed at enhancing the food delivery sector. NRAI President Sagar Daryani emphasized that the MoU will clarify the roles of NRAI, ONDC, and various buyer and seller apps, marking a collaborative effort to stimulate growth in the industry. US Team in India to Resolve Trade Talks Stalemate

A US trade delegation, led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, is set to meet Indian officials in New Delhi on Tuesday to address the stalled India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal expressed optimism about the discussions, which aim to resolve issues surrounding US demands for greater market access to sensitive agricultural products like soybean and corn. The negotiations have faced setbacks, particularly after former President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods and criticized India's purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. While the upcoming meeting is not a formal negotiation round, it is seen as a critical step towards reaching an agreement. The outcome may also determine whether Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Washington for further talks. Recently, Trump signaled a desire to mend relations with India, expressing confidence in achieving a successful resolution for both nations. sources

Dealers boost OEM orders to meet rising demand

Automobile dealers are ramping up vehicle stocks and placing additional orders with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in response to a surge in consumer demand following reduced GST rates effective from September 22. Dealers have reported increasing orders by up to 20% across various segments, including passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles, as consumer inquiries rise after a prolonged lull. Sachin Vasantrao Mahajan, Chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) Maharashtra, noted that dealers are keen to maintain inventory through the festival season. Despite a subdued Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam due to delayed purchases, the anticipated decline in vehicle prices has led to increased foot traffic in showrooms. Additionally, there is a notable interest from consumers looking to purchase second or third vehicles, a trend not seen in the previous festive season. While bookings are low during the Shraadh period, inquiries about vehicle customization and delivery timelines are on the rise. sources

India's August exports up 6.7%, trade deficit narrows

India's goods exports rose by 6.7% year-on-year in August 2025, reaching $35.10 billion, driven by strong performances in the gem and jewellery, engineering, electronics, and petroleum sectors. However, shipments to the US showed signs of slowing down, despite a 7.15% increase to $6.86 billion, as exporters rushed to avoid new tariffs imposed on August 7 and 27. The trade deficit narrowed significantly to $26.49 billion from $35.64 billion a year earlier, aided by a 10.12% drop in imports, particularly gold, which plummeted 56% to $5.4 billion. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal highlighted the resilience of Indian exports amid global uncertainties, while industry leaders warned of potential vulnerabilities due to US tariffs, especially in the engineering sector. Calls for enhanced government support for MSMEs and timely export incentives were made to maintain competitiveness in a challenging global trade environment. sources

L&T proposes exit from unprofitable Hyderabad Metro Rail project

Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) has announced its intention to divest its 90% stake in the L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail project, citing significant financial losses and challenges in continuing the phase-II expansion. In a letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, KVB Reddy, the company's Managing Director and CEO, expressed readiness to sell the stake to either the state or central government through a new special purpose vehicle (SPV). The losses have been attributed to project execution delays caused by changes in alignment mandated by the Telangana government and the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. As of March 2017, claims to the Telangana government had escalated from ₹3,756 crore to ₹5,000 crore by February 2020. Despite ongoing financial stress and a failed request for assistance from the state government, L&T remains open to transferring its equity stake and operational responsibilities for the metro network. sources
