New low forms over Comorin, delays Bay depression 24 hours

Meteorologists are closely monitoring two live weather systems in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting potential cyclonic activity. The GFS 0.125 model aligns with the IMD's outlook, predicting a well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca could intensify into a depression and later a cyclone named Senyar by Thursday. Meanwhile, another low-pressure system is developing over the Comorin region and Sri Lanka. Fishermen have been warned to avoid several coastal areas, including the south-west Bay and the Gulf of Mannar, for safety over the next few days. Heavy rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, with thunderstorms and gusty winds anticipated as the systems evolve. The IMD's projections indicate a complex weather scenario, with model discrepancies complicating forecasts. sources

"Private Capex Slumps Due to Cheap Chinese Imports"

Economist Sajjid Chinoy has called for a reassessment of India's restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) from China, suggesting that welcoming Chinese investments could be more beneficial than imposing tariffs on imports. Speaking at an Asia Society event, Chinoy, who serves as chief India economist at J.P. Morgan and is a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, highlighted that the current influx of cheaper Chinese goods is stifling domestic capital expenditure due to diminished demand visibility. He noted that the trade deficit with China has surged from $50 billion to $115 billion over five years, exacerbated by the 2020 "press note 3" restrictions. Chinoy argued that fostering Chinese investment could create local jobs and enhance India's manufacturing capabilities, while also emphasizing the need for increased research and development spending to drive innovation in a competitive market. His remarks come amid discussions of potentially reviewing these investment restrictions. sources

India's H1 marine exports rebound in Asia, EU markets

India's marine product exports have surged by 16.18% in the April–October 2025 period, rising from $4.20 billion to $4.87 billion, driven by strong global demand and a rebound in key Asian and European markets. Notably, shrimp and prawn exports increased by 17.43%, contributing significantly to the overall growth. While the United States, traditionally India's largest shrimp market, saw a 7.43% decline, this was offset by substantial gains in exports to China, Vietnam, Belgium, Japan, Russia, Canada, and the UK, reflecting a diversification in export destinations. K.N. Raghavan, Secretary General of the Seafood Exporters Association of India, highlighted the importance of this shift, particularly following high US import tariffs. The Ministry of Commerce's support in facilitating exports to the European Union and other markets has been crucial, with EU exports increasing by nearly 40%. The outlook for the remainder of FY26 remains positive, bolstered by anticipated growth in aquaculture output. sources

Tropical Agro launches insecticide for leaf-eating pests in Chennai

Chennai-based Tropical Agrosystem (India) Pvt. Ltd has unveiled a next-generation insecticide, Tag Hikima, designed to combat major pests such as fruit borers and Spodoptera species, which are notorious for causing significant crop damage. The innovative formulation combines Emamectin, Chlorantraniliprole, and Deltamethrin, delivering rapid pest knockdown and long-lasting protection, particularly during critical flowering and fruiting stages. This product is particularly effective against Lepidopteran caterpillars, which can lead to yield losses of up to 50% in crops like chilli, cotton, and tomato. Tag Hikima not only halts pest feeding quickly but also promotes plant growth through its phyto-tonic effect, contributing to higher yields. Founder VK Jhaver emphasized the importance of addressing pest-related economic losses, stating that the company aims to provide innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture. The insecticide has already shown promising results in trials, particularly against fruit borers in chilli crops. sources

Air India, Akasa cancel flights after Ethiopia volcano eruption

Air India and Akasa Air announced the cancellation of several flights due to disruptions caused by ash plumes from a historic volcanic eruption in Ethiopia. Akasa Air also scrapped flights to Middle Eastern destinations, including Jeddah, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi, during the same period. The eruption of Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano, which sent ash plumes soaring up to 14 km (8.7 miles) high, occurred on Sunday and is the first of its kind in recorded history. The ash cloud has since spread to parts of Pakistan and northern India, with the India Meteorological Department predicting it will clear Indian skies by 1400 GMT on Tuesday. sources

India's tree nut imports surge due to walnut, pistachio demand

India's imports of tree nuts, including almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, are projected to increase by approximately 7% for the marketing year 2025-26, driven by rising domestic consumption. Factors such as a growing population, increased disposable incomes, and heightened health awareness are contributing to this demand. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), almond imports are expected to rise to 180,000 tonnes, while domestic consumption remains steady at 184,000 tonnes. Global almond production is anticipated to grow by 9% to 1.777 million tonnes, primarily due to a 10% increase in U.S. output. Additionally, walnut imports are set to surge nearly 20% to 75,000 tonnes, amid a slight decline in domestic production. Pistachio consumption is also expected to rise over 12% to 50,500 tonnes, with India relying heavily on imports from countries like the U.S. and Iran. Global production of pistachios is projected to reach 1.203 million tonnes. sources

India's Household Spending Shifts to Asset-Building: Advisory Council

A recent survey by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) reveals a significant shift in household spending patterns in India, moving from basic necessities to asset-building expenditures. Households are increasingly investing in personal goods and cooking appliances, even among the bottom 40 percent of earners, while spending on clothing and footwear declines. This trend, driven by greater financial access and market connectivity, is expected to enhance productivity and living standards. The survey, analyzing data from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey for 2011-12 and 2023-24, highlights motor vehicle ownership as the fastest-growing durable asset, with notable urban-rural convergence. While television ownership has stagnated or declined in some areas, mobile phones have become the primary medium for information and entertainment, achieving near-universal adoption. Overall, the report indicates a significant reduction in asset poverty, with only 5 percent of households lacking any durable assets. sources

Canada's diplomat: Ottawa accelerating India trade deal efforts

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced on Monday that Canada and India will expedite efforts to finalize a trade deal following two years of strained relations, particularly after allegations linking the Indian government to the June 2023 assassination of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This development comes after a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in South Africa, where both leaders agreed to revive stalled negotiations. Anand emphasized a new foreign policy approach aimed at diversifying trade, as Canada seeks to double non-US trade over the next decade. With over 75% of Canadian exports currently directed to the US, Anand noted the importance of adapting to a changing global economic landscape. Additionally, Canada is working to improve relations with China, following a recent meeting between Carney and President Xi Jinping. sources
