Rain subsides as new clouds gather over the Bay

The South Peninsula of India experienced a clearing of cloud cover on Wednesday morning, as the clouds shifted towards Lakshadweep, while new formations appeared over the eastern Bay of Bengal, indicating the potential development of a low-pressure area. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with Kayamkulam receiving the highest rainfall of 12 cm. The IMD forecasts widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the coming days, while conditions in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are expected to be more scattered. The current low-pressure system remains stable over the Comorin area but is anticipated to weaken as it moves into deeper waters. Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated a new low-pressure area may form over the southeast Bay of Bengal by Saturday, with global models suggesting a potential storm could develop. sources

Goyal's Tel Aviv Visit May Review India-Israel FTA Progress

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal is set to review the progress of the proposed India-Israel free trade agreement (FTA) during his three-day visit to Tel Aviv, which begins this week. Leading a 60-member business delegation, Goyal aims to enhance bilateral trade and investment, focusing on sectors such as agriculture, defence, and emerging technologies. The FTA negotiations, ongoing since May 2010, resumed in October 2021, but recent trade figures show a decline, with India's exports to Israel dropping 52% to $2.14 billion in 2024-25. Goyal will engage with Israeli officials, including Minister of Economy and Industry Nir Barkat, and participate in the India-Israel Business Forum and the CEOs Forum. The visit follows the signing of a Bilateral Investment Agreement in September, which aims to bolster investor confidence by reducing the local remedies exhaustion period for Israeli investors. sources

Air India seeks Xinjiang airspace amid financial struggles

The Indian government is currently evaluating Air India's request to negotiate with China for alternative flight routes through sensitive military airspace in Xinjiang, which could facilitate quicker access to the US, Canada, and Europe. This plea arises amid ongoing challenges for Air India, exacerbated by the closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian carriers, which has increased operational costs by 29% and extended journey times by up to three hours. The airline, which is striving to recover from a tragic crash in June, estimates that the airspace restrictions could cost it $455 million annually. The requested access to Chinese airspace, particularly around Hotan, is seen as a strategic necessity to mitigate losses and restore capacity. However, experts express skepticism about China's willingness to grant such access due to safety and security concerns in the region. Meanwhile, Air India is also seeking temporary financial support until the airspace situation improves. sources

RBI's inflation misses raise doubts on India's forecasts

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is facing heightened scrutiny over its inflation forecasting model after a significant miss of 0.7 percentage points in the first quarter of the year, the largest gap in nearly six years. This overestimation has led to a hawkish policy stance, with economists suggesting that the RBI has been overly cautious in its interest rate decisions, particularly following a surprising drop in inflation rates. The central bank's projections for the fiscal year, which anticipated inflation at 2.6%, now appear outdated, with forecasts for the current quarter expected to be even lower. Contributing factors include a sharp decline in food prices, which constitute a substantial portion of the consumer price index. Analysts warn that persistent forecasting errors could undermine the RBI's credibility and lead to unnecessarily restrictive monetary policy. The RBI is refining its forecasting model and plans to update its consumer price basket early next year to improve accuracy. sources

Govt to invest ₹30,000 crore in next UDAN phase

The Indian government has proposed a ₹30,000 crore outlay for an expanded version of the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) regional air connectivity scheme, aiming to enhance air travel to 120 additional destinations and serve four crore passengers over the next decade. The Expenditure Finance Committee is currently reviewing the proposal, which seeks to extend the scheme beyond its original 2027 deadline. Of the total funding, ₹18,000 crore is allocated for new airport development, while ₹12,000 crore will support viability gap funding to incentivize airlines to connect underserved regions. Launched in 2016, the original UDAN scheme has operationalized 649 of 915 routes, connecting 93 airports, including heliports and water aerodromes. The revised framework aims to address previous challenges, attract private investment, and improve access to remote areas, with a focus on hilly and Northeastern districts. sources

India to decide soon on sugar and ethanol price hikes

The Indian government is contemplating a revision of the minimum selling price (MSP) for sugar, which has remained unchanged at ₹31 per kg since February 2019. The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has proposed an increase to ₹40 per kg, while the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) advocates for a rate aligned with the current pan-India ex-mill realization. This discussion follows the Centre's recent approval for the export of 15 lakh tonnes of sugar for the 2025-26 season. Additionally, there are calls for an increase in ethanol prices derived from sugarcane, as current rates are deemed unviable for mills. The cost of sugar production has risen to ₹40.24 per kg due to a 29% increase in the fair and remunerative price of sugarcane. The government is also focusing on digital initiatives to enhance efficiency in the food distribution sector. sources

Startups join Budget talks; capital markets seek tax cuts

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the fifth Pre-Budget Consultation in New Delhi on Tuesday, focusing on the startup ecosystem for the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27. This marks the first time startups have been included in these discussions, reflecting their growing significance, with over 200,000 registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Key attendees included prominent figures from various startups, who are hopeful for measures similar to last year's budget, which introduced a ₹10,000 crore Fund-of-Funds for startups. Concurrently, Sitharaman also met with capital market representatives, who advocated for reduced transaction taxes and improved market efficiency, as the sector anticipates raising ₹1.6 lakh crore through IPOs in FY26. The discussions come as the government aims to address economic growth, job creation, and demand stimulation amid geopolitical uncertainties, with the Budget presentation scheduled for February 1. sources

PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Coverage for Wild Animal Damage, Floods

In a significant policy shift, the Indian government has announced that starting from the next Kharif season, crop losses due to wild animal attacks and inundation will be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This decision comes in response to long-standing demands from farmers, particularly those in flood-prone areas and regions near wildlife corridors. Under the PMFBY, farmers pay a fixed premium, with the government subsidizing the excess costs. The revised framework will recognize wild animal attacks as a new risk category, requiring states to identify responsible species and vulnerable districts. However, experts have raised concerns about the 72-hour reporting deadline for crop damage, citing challenges in difficult terrains. The inclusion of inundation in the PMFBY aims to address the protection gap left since its removal from the localised calamity category in 2018, which had left many farmers without compensation for flood-related losses. sources
