Trump raises India's tariff to 50% on Russian oil imports

In a significant escalation of trade tensions, US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% additional tariff on goods imported from India, citing New Delhi's ongoing purchases of Russian oil as the primary reason. The executive order was signed just 14 hours before the initial tariffs were set to take effect on August 7, bringing the total tariff on Indian goods, excluding a limited exemption list, to 50%. The new levy will be implemented 21 days after the initial tariffs. This move underscores the growing friction between the two nations over trade practices and geopolitical alliances. The situation remains fluid as further developments are anticipated. sources

Over 8,600 companies voluntarily removed from RoC in FY26

In July, India saw a significant increase in company registrations, with 17,555 new Indian and foreign firms incorporated, marking an 18% rise from 14,887 in the same month last year, according to the Corporate Affairs Ministry. However, the number of companies voluntarily seeking to remove their names from the Registrar of Companies has reached over 8,600 in the first three and a half months of FY26, accounting for 54% of last fiscal's total. This trend may be attributed to weak consumption patterns, particularly in urban areas, and geopolitical uncertainties. Notably, only 24 companies were struck off between April 1 and July 16, compared to 30 in the entire previous fiscal year. The Minister of State in Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, confirmed that no special strike-off drive is currently underway, although provisions exist for companies that have not operated for two years or failed to pay their subscriptions. sources

CCI directs DG to probe subsidized urea product tagging

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has mandated its Director General to investigate allegations against Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) for unlawfully tagging other products with subsidised urea, a practice deemed a violation of competition law. The investigation, prompted by a complaint from Maharashtra farmer leader Raghunath Patil, must be completed within 60 days. The CCI's Bench, led by Chairperson Ravneet Kaur, expressed a prima facie view that RCF's actions contravene several provisions of the Competition Act. Patil's petition highlights that farmers have been coerced into purchasing additional non-subsidised products alongside urea, which is essential for crop production. The Department of Fertilizers had previously warned companies against such practices, and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has promised to establish a helpline for farmers to report these issues. The CCI's order emphasizes that the investigation's outcome remains to be determined. sources

Tamil Nadu textile exporters to US adopt cautious approach

Garment manufacturers in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, are facing significant challenges following the United States' imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian imports, which has led to halted production and order execution among exporters. Industry representatives report that approximately ₹12,000 crore, or 30% of Tiruppur's annual ₹45,000 crore garment exports, are at risk, with an anticipated loss of around ₹6,000 crore due to the new tariffs. The Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA) has indicated that many manufacturers are adopting a 'wait and watch' strategy, pausing production while assessing their options. TEA President K M Subramanian emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that exporters are holding stock as American buyers have put orders on hold. However, there is optimism regarding potential opportunities in the UK market following India's Free Trade Agreement with the country. The industry plans to engage with both Central and State governments to address the tariff's impact. sources

Odisha ships dragon fruits to Dubai

Odisha has successfully exported dragon fruits to Dubai for the second consecutive year, with 330 kg shipped from Balangir district on Friday. The fruits, cultivated in Patnagarh, were sold at ₹300 per kg, reflecting a 20% increase from last year's price of ₹250. This price rise is attributed to heightened demand, improved quality, and increased farmer incomes from high-value crops. Subrat Kumar Panda, Director of Horticulture in Odisha, hailed this achievement as a testament to the state's growing capabilities in high-value horticulture and its readiness for competitive global markets. The successful export initiative is supported by the Odisha Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment through the PSFPO project, implemented by Palladium with backing from the Gates Foundation, which focuses on strengthening farmer producer organizations. Marketing assistance was also provided in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. sources

India, Oman free trade deal announcement expected soon: Official

India and Oman are poised to announce the conclusion of their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) soon, with the trade pact's text currently being translated into Arabic. Following this, both nations' cabinets will need to approve the agreement. An official indicated that the announcement would come "much less" than the previously speculated two to three months. The CEPA negotiations began in November 2023 and aim to significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on a wide range of goods, while also facilitating trade in services and attracting investments. Oman ranks as India's third-largest export destination within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with bilateral trade exceeding $10 billion in 2024-25. India's primary imports from Oman include petroleum products and urea, which together constitute over 70% of its imports. India has a similar trade agreement with the UAE, effective since May 2022. sources

India downed 6 Pakistani aircraft in May conflict, says chief

India's Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh announced on Saturday that the Indian Air Force (IAF) shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and one military aircraft during intense clashes in May, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, Singh confirmed that the majority of the Pakistani aircraft were downed using India's Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system, supported by electronic tracking data. He described the incident as the largest recorded surface-to-air kill, which drew applause from attendees, including military officials and veterans. While Singh did not specify the types of aircraft involved, Pakistan's military has previously denied any losses, asserting that it downed six Indian aircraft during the same period. The ongoing conflict has seen both sides exchanging claims and counterclaims regarding aerial engagements, with international observers also weighing in on the situation. sources
