In response, CPM's John Brittas defended the state's actions, highlighting that the Central government also provided assistance to Turkey through Operation Dost. Brittas accused Tharoor of exhibiting "selective amnesia" for questioning Kerala's aid while ignoring the broader national context of support for Turkey. The tension stems from Turkey's historical backing of Pakistan during military confrontations with India, leading to a decline in public sentiment towards Turkey, including boycotts of Turkish goods and a decrease in its popularity as a tourist destination in India.
