The selection process for Maharashtra's next Chief Minister is progressing without disputes, according to senior BJP sources. While the party's grassroots have long advocated for Devendra Fadnavis to take the helm since 2022, Eknath Shinde was previously appointed due to his key role in forming the alliance government. However, with the BJP holding a significant majority of 132 MLAs, the push for Fadnavis has intensified, despite the Shiv Sena advocating for Shinde's continuation. Sources suggest that Ajit Pawar of the NCP is open to Fadnavis assuming the role. The BJP only needs support from one of its allies to reach the majority threshold of 145 in the 288-member Assembly. Observers will be appointed in the coming days to oversee the selection, followed by a BJP Legislature Party meeting in Mumbai to finalize the leader after consultations with allies. Eknath Shinde resigned earlier today as the Assembly's term concluded.
