MUMBAI: As Mumbai and its surrounding districts endure a heatwave, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued guidelines urging residents to take precautions against the rising temperatures. In a statement released on Monday, the BMC highlighted the heatwave conditions, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department, which may persist until March 11 and could recur frequently in March and April. Vaiko, representing the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), highlighted a recent meeting where Tamil Nadu's Education Minister sought funds under the PM Schools for Rising India scheme but faced conditions tied to the National Education Policy (NEP) advocating a three-language formula. While Tamil Nadu parties, except the BJP, oppose this policy, Vaiko emphasized their support for English as a vital tool for progress, citing the state's dominance in various sectors due to English proficiency. Pradhan, meanwhile, criticized the DMK government for fostering a "fear psychosis" around the three-language formula, asserting that multilingualism is essential in a democratic society and that opposition to the NEP is politically motivated.

Published: Mar 12 2025, 1 pmeznews.inRahul Gandhi has challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that the Congress will defeat them in the 2027 Gujarat assembly elections. Speaking to Congress workers, he acknowledged the significant challenges ahead, including internal divisions, alleging that some party members are colluding with the BJP. With the Congress out of power for 30 years, he described the party's revival as a "50-year project" and emphasized the need to remove ineffective leaders. The Congress faced a severe setback in the 2022 elections, winning only 17 seats, a dramatic decline from 77 in 2017. To improve its prospects, analysts suggest the party must introspect on leadership, identify committed local leaders, and engage urban voters, where it currently lags behind the BJP. Without these strategic changes, the Congress faces a daunting task in reclaiming its position in Gujarat, a state dominated by the BJP.

In Rohtak, BJP's Ram Avtar won decisively against Congress's Surajmal Kiloi by over 45,000 votes. The BJP also secured mayoral victories in Ambala and is leading in several other districts, with overall voter turnout at a disappointing 41%. Opposition parties, including the BJP and JD(S), have accused the Congress of misusing taxpayers' money, prompting protests outside the Vidhana Soudha. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar defended the appointments, asserting that party workers who aided in bringing the government to power have a right to participate in overseeing state programs. Critics, including BJP's R Ashoka, argued that this conflates party and government roles and questioned the legitimacy of funding Congress workers with public money. Shivakumar countered that the government is committed to its guarantee schemes, which aim to alleviate public distress amid rising inflation, and emphasized that the BJP has similarly implemented such schemes in other states. The BJP plans to escalate its protests, including a memorandum to the Governor.
