Coldplay Issues Warning Before Ahmedabad Concert

The District Child Protection Unit in Ahmedabad has issued a directive to Coldplay's Chris Martin and concert organisers, prohibiting the use of children on stage during the upcoming concert at Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26. The notice mandates that children must wear earplugs or hearing protection due to potential sound levels exceeding 120 decibels, which could jeopardize their health. This action follows a complaint from Pandit Rao Dharnevar, an Assistant Professor of Sociology, who raised concerns about the adverse effects of loud music and bright lights on children's physical and mental well-being. Dharnevar has previously filed a similar complaint regarding a New Year's Eve concert by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, leading to a call for restrictions on songs promoting alcohol. He reiterated his commitment to advocating for children's rights in future events. sources

Rahul Gandhi Explains Differences Between Congress and BJP

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized that quality education cannot be achieved through privatization and financial incentives, advocating instead for increased government spending on public education. In a recent discussion with IIT Madras students, he highlighted the need to redefine success and encourage exploration beyond traditional career paths, urging a focus on fairness, creativity, and innovation. Gandhi criticized the current education system as restrictive and hierarchical, arguing it limits children's aspirations to a narrow set of professions. He called for a shift towards valuing diverse careers and fostering an environment where students can pursue their passions. On the political front, he contrasted Congress's inclusive growth approach with the BJP's aggressive economic model, underscoring the importance of India's strategic balancing act between superpowers like China and the U.S. Gandhi concluded that real innovation stems from production and practical skills rather than solely from research and development investments. sources

Man Slides on Rope in Himachal Valley After 40 Years

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, is currently hosting a unique four-day religious event known as 'Bhunda Maha Yagya,' which aims to unite the deities of the Spail Valley and celebrate the region's cultural heritage. The highlight of the event was a rare 'rope-sliding tradition,' performed on Saturday by 65-year-old Surat Ram, a member of the Beda caste, who slid down a sacred rope for nearly one kilometer from one hill to another. Despite a brief mishap when the rope fell from the hands of the supporters on the opposite side, it was quickly recovered. The rope, or 'munji,' was crafted with strict adherence to rituals, including celibacy and silence, and took two and a half months to prepare. Thousands gathered in Dalgaon, including Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, to witness this vibrant tradition, which last occurred in 1985 when Ram was just 21. sources

Two ex-soldiers kill woman, twins; arrested after 19 years

In a shocking case that has unfolded over nearly two decades, two Indian Army soldiers, Dibil Kumar B and Rajesh P, have been arrested for the 2006 murder of 24-year-old Ranjini and her newborn twin daughters in Kerala. Fearing a paternity test would confirm his fatherhood of the infants, Kumar allegedly conspired with Rajesh to kill Ranjini shortly after she sought the Kerala State Women's Commission's help for recognition of the twins' paternity. Following the crime, the men deserted the Army, assumed new identities, and lived undetected in Puducherry, marrying and starting families. The case, initially investigated by local police and later the CBI, saw little progress until a tip-off led to their capture on Friday. The duo has been remanded in police custody, with further investigations pending as the CBI seeks to establish a clearer timeline of events. sources

India Reports No Spike in Influenza-Like Cases Amid HMPV

NEW DELHI: Amid reports of a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, a joint monitoring group in India, chaired by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), stated that the situation aligns with the ongoing flu season. Experts from various health organizations, including the World Health Organisation and the Indian Council of Medical Research, confirmed that the current rise in cases in China is attributed to influenza, RSV, and HMPV, typical pathogens for this time of year. In India, surveillance systems indicate no unusual increase in influenza-like or severe acute respiratory illnesses. While the ICMR will increase HMPV testing, officials urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses and generally causes mild symptoms. Dr. Atul Goel reassured that there is no cause for alarm, as hospitals are prepared for seasonal respiratory infections. sources
