Court Orders CBI Investigation into Police Attack on Survivor's Parents

The Madras High Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate allegations that a woman police inspector assaulted and harassed the parents of a minor rape survivor in Chennai. The court's action follows media reports detailing the incident from August, where the survivor's mother was allegedly detained at a police station past 1 am and assaulted. Furthermore, the inspector reportedly questioned the survivor at the hospital in her uniform, breaching POCSO guidelines. The father of the survivor was also reportedly assaulted in the presence of the alleged perpetrator. Local police had previously claimed their inquiry found no evidence of sexual assault, citing the survivor's reluctance to name the accused due to fear. Additionally, the court has permitted the family to seek monetary compensation for their ordeal. sources

Centre Clarifies Use of Digi Yatra Data for Tax Evasion

The Indian government has dismissed claims that passenger data from the Digi Yatra application is being utilized to target tax evaders. The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that recent media reports alleging such data sharing with tax authorities are "unfounded and inaccurate." They clarified that Digi Yatra employs a Self-Sovereign Identity model, ensuring that personally identifiable information is stored solely on users' devices, and is deleted if the app is uninstalled. Furthermore, the ministry emphasized that airport systems automatically purge passenger data within 24 hours of flight departure and noted that Digi Yatra is intended exclusively for domestic travelers. The Income Tax Department also denied the reports, confirming they are not using Digi Yatra data for tax enforcement. Digi Yatra, which uses facial recognition technology for seamless airport processing, requires users to register with Aadhaar verification and a self-image capture. sources

LT Governor Criticizes Kejriwal's 'Temporary' Label for Atishi

In a pointed letter to Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena expressed his discontent over her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal's remark labeling her a "temporary Chief Minister," emphasizing that such a term undermines democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution. Saxena highlighted the constitutional significance of her role and criticized the government's failures, stating that while Kejriwal acknowledged shortcomings, Atishi would ultimately bear the blame despite limited time left in her tenure ahead of the February assembly elections. Despite this critique, Saxena commended Atishi for her proactive governance, noting that she is the first Chief Minister in his tenure to actively manage multiple departments. He previously praised her as "a thousand times better" than Kejriwal, indicating a stark contrast in leadership styles. Atishi has yet to respond to these comments, which follow a history of tensions between Saxena and Kejriwal's administration. sources

BJP Attacks Rahul Gandhi During Vietnam Trip, Congress Replies

NEW DELHI: The BJP has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for reportedly traveling to Vietnam during a period of national mourning for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, with BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accusing him of prioritizing leisure over honoring Singh's legacy. The BJP further criticized the absence of Congress leaders during the immersion of Dr. Singh's ashes, while senior Congress member Pawan Khera clarified that the decision to skip the ceremony was made to afford privacy to Singh's family during their time of grief. sources

Maharashtra Minister's "Kerala Mini Pak" Comment Causes Controversy

Nitesh Rane, a Maharashtra minister and son of former Union Minister Narayan Rane, has ignited controversy by labeling Kerala a "mini Pakistan" while targeting Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who represent Wayanad in the Lok Sabha. Rane's remarks, which included accusations that "all terrorists vote for them," drew swift condemnation from the Opposition, with Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe questioning Rane's suitability as a minister for making such inflammatory statements. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey suggested that Rane's comments stemmed from the BJP's anxiety over electoral losses. In response to the backlash, Rane clarified that while Kerala is part of India, he expressed concern over the declining Hindu population and alleged religious conversions. This is not Rane's first controversy; he previously faced legal issues for inflammatory speeches and a defamation suit from Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut. sources
