The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), a major social security body, facilitates withdrawals from provident fund accounts for significant life events such as marriage, education, housing, and medical emergencies. Employees can make three types of withdrawals: final settlement, partial withdrawal, and pension withdrawal. While employed, individuals cannot access their funds; however, those unemployed for at least one month can withdraw 75% of their savings, increasing to 100% after two months. For education, up to 50% of the employee's contribution can be withdrawn, while 90% is accessible for housing purchases or construction. Withdrawals for marriage expenses allow up to 50% of savings. Job changes do not necessitate withdrawing funds, as they can be transferred via an active Universal Account Number (UAN). Upon retirement at 58, members can claim their final settlement, and withdrawals initiated within five years may incur taxes, although amounts under Rs 50,000 are exempt from TDS.
