Father and brother kill bride a day after wedding

A woman named Neha Rathore was found dead in Noida just a day after marrying her boyfriend, Devendra Singh, against her family's wishes. The 23-year-old was allegedly strangled by her father, Bhanu Rathore, and her brother, Himanshu, who cremated her body to conceal their crime. Neha's family opposed the relationship due to their differing community backgrounds, and her father had previously forbidden her from meeting Singh. After the couple married at an Arya Samaj temple in Ghaziabad on March 11, Bhanu lured Neha back home under the pretense of planning a proper wedding. The police cracked the case within three hours of receiving information about her suspicious death, leading to the arrest of both her father and brother on charges of murder and evidence destruction. Investigators are currently examining the crime scene and reviewing CCTV footage to gather further evidence. sources

N Sitharaman Criticizes DMK's Rupee Move as Secessionist

In a heated political clash, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the DMK's decision to replace the official rupee symbol '₹' with the Tamil letter 'Ru' in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26 documents. She described the move as indicative of a "dangerous mindset" that undermines national unity and promotes regional chauvinism, questioning why the DMK had not protested the rupee symbol's adoption back in 2010 when they were part of the ruling alliance. Sitharaman emphasized the rupee symbol's significance in global financial transactions and accused the DMK of disregarding the contributions of Tamil youth. In response, DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai defended the change as a prioritization of Tamil language and culture, amid ongoing tensions over the Centre's three-language policy and concerns about political dominance from the north. The controversy continues to escalate as the DMK and BJP trade barbs in an election year. sources

World's Most Polluted City Isn't Delhi

Byrnihat, a small city on the Meghalaya-Assam border, has been identified as the most polluted city in the world, according to IQAir's 2024 World Air Quality Report. The report reveals that Byrnihat's annual average PM2.5 concentration stands at 128.2 micrograms per cubic metre, significantly exceeding the World Health Organization's limit of 5 micrograms. This industrial hub, which includes distilleries and iron and steel plants, is connected to Shillong and Guwahati. Following Byrnihat, Delhi, Karaganda, Lahore, and Faridabad rank among the most polluted cities. Although India saw a 7% decline in PM2.5 levels in 2024, it remains the fifth most polluted country, with numerous cities exceeding WHO limits. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma noted that pollution sources may primarily originate from Assam and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to improve air quality. He has reached out to Assam's Chief Minister to address the issue. sources

Telangana Daily's Blank Editorial: Journalism Will Not Be Silenced

HYDERABAD: In a bold protest against the Telangana government's alleged freezing of advertisements, the Urdu daily Munsif Daily has published a blank editorial, likening the situation to the Emergency era under Indira Gandhi in the 1970s. The newspaper contends that it is being punished for its critical reporting on the Congress government led by Revanth Reddy, which has highlighted issues such as communal unrest, police failures, and the demolition of a mosque. Munsif Daily's Executive Editor Ather Moin stated that the publication will not mislead readers about the state’s conditions, emphasizing the ongoing struggles faced by the poor. The Congress party defended its actions, asserting that it is within its rights to decide on advertisement spending. Munsif also pointed to Rahul Gandhi's remarks on press freedom, criticizing the government for stifling dissent, and drawing parallels to historical attempts to silence the media. sources

Annamalai's 'Stupid' Remark at DMK Over Rupee Issue

In a heated exchange, BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai criticized the ruling DMK for replacing the rupee symbol in its budget promotional materials with the Tamil letter 'Ru'. He argued that the DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, is unaware that the rupee symbol was designed by Udaya Kumar, son of a former DMK MLA, and claimed this action disrespects Tamil culture. Annamalai emphasized that while 'Ru' is commonly used in Tamil, it should not replace the nationally accepted rupee symbol. He accused the DMK of escalating a "language war" against the central government, particularly regarding the contentious National Education Policy, which the DMK argues imposes Hindi on Tamil Nadu. In response, DMK leaders defended their decision as a promotion of Tamil, asserting that there is nothing illegal about it and dismissing the BJP's claims as unfounded. sources

Holi Poster in Shantiniketan Ignites Political Controversy in Bengal

A poster at Shantiniketan's artisan fair, which restricts the use of colours during Holi celebrations, has ignited a political firestorm in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress government, led by Mamata Banerjee, insists that the restrictions aim to protect the local environment, while the opposition BJP accuses it of banning the festival. The poster, stating that activities such as playing with colours and using drones are prohibited in the reserved forest area, has drawn criticism from BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, who claims this is part of a broader pattern of appeasement politics. He highlighted that police have set limits on celebrations coinciding with Holi and the Basanta Utsav, which celebrates spring and was initiated by Rabindranath Tagore. In response, State Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda refuted claims of a ban, asserting that the request was solely to safeguard nature and accusing the BJP of politicising the issue. sources

Tamil Nadu Removes Rupee Symbol from State Budget Amid Controversy

The Tamil Nadu government has replaced the rupee symbol (Re) with a Tamil letter (Ru) in promotional materials for its upcoming 2025/26 budget, a move highlighted by Chief Minister MK Stalin on social media. This change comes amid ongoing tensions between the ruling DMK and the BJP-led central government over the National Education Policy's emphasis on Hindi, which the DMK opposes, advocating instead for the state's existing two-language policy. BJP leaders criticized the symbol swap, suggesting it reflects the DMK's desire to distance itself from national identity, with state spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy accusing the party of distraction tactics. The BJP's K Annamalai and former Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan also condemned the decision, asserting it undermines national interests. The political backdrop includes an electoral battle ahead, with the DMK and AIADMK vying for power, while the BJP seeks to establish a foothold in Tamil Nadu. sources
