Judges Need Training on Social Media Trolling: DY Chandrachud

Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has called for training judges to navigate the complexities of social media, highlighting the prevalence of trolling during his tenure. Speaking at NDTV's Samvidhan @ 75 event, he acknowledged that he has faced multiple trolling incidents and emphasized the need for judges to adapt to what he termed a "post-truth society." Chandrachud noted that social media has evolved into a powerful tool that can influence public opinion and judicial outcomes, raising concerns about the implications for freedom of speech when individuals target judges personally. He remarked on the shortened attention spans fostered by platforms like YouTube and Instagram, which can undermine the nuanced decision-making required in the judiciary. Ultimately, he advocated for a balance between free expression and the integrity of judicial processes, underscoring the importance of understanding the foundational values of the Constitution. sources

Assam BJP Targets Five Minority Stronghold Seats After Victory

In a significant political shift in Assam, the BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarmah celebrated a decisive victory in the Samaguri assembly by-election, a seat long held by the Congress party. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is now targeting five additional minority-dominated constituencies for the upcoming assembly elections, emphasizing a strategy of seeking minority votes without appeasement. Sarma highlighted the BJP's unexpected success in Karimganj during the Lok Sabha polls, where the party secured a seat in a region with a 65% religious minority population. The recent by-election results, where the BJP won three seats and its allies one each, bolster the party's confidence ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Sarmah's win in Samaguri, where he defeated Congress veteran Rakibul Hussain by over 24,000 votes, underscores the BJP's expanding influence in traditionally rival strongholds. sources

Manipur Police Walk 3 Hours to Destroy Poppy Farms, Confront Armed Miscreants

A Manipur Police team attempting to destroy illegal opium farms in Kangpokpi district was forced to withdraw after being confronted by "80-90 armed miscreants," according to a first information report (FIR). The police contingent, comprising 25 personnel and local volunteers, was ill-equipped for the task, carrying only three assault rifles, which hampered their ability to efficiently clear the farms. The team, having trekked for three hours, turned back due to the threat posed by the armed group, which reportedly brandished guns and knives. The FIR highlighted concerns over the remote location, where reinforcements would take too long to arrive, prioritizing the safety of the officers. Meanwhile, the Kuki National Front insurgent group operates in the area, which has seen rising tensions amid allegations of illegal opium cultivation linked to Kuki insurgents. Manipur's Chief Minister has indicated that operations to destroy these farms will soon be intensified. sources

Former Chief Justice UU Lalit Highlights Bail Is Norm Caveat

Former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit emphasized the need for a balanced approach to bail decisions during NDTV's Samvidhan@75 conclave, asserting that while bail is a right, certain legal considerations must be addressed. He noted that laws dictate that bail should not be easily granted for serious offenses, such as those carrying a jail term of seven years or more, to ensure societal safety, particularly in cases like rape where the accused might pose a risk to others. Justice Lalit highlighted the importance of allowing judges the discretion to assess the prima facie guilt of an accused, warning against overly restrictive measures that could hinder bail grants. He also criticized the investigative methods used in cases, particularly the lack of available forensic facilities, which impede timely justice. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions surrounding high-profile bail cases, including those involving political figures like former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. sources
