Nana Patole Resigns as Maharashtra Congress Chief After Defeat

Nana Patole has resigned as the Maharashtra Congress chief following a disastrous performance in the recent Assembly elections, where the party secured only 16 out of 103 contested seats. Patole, who narrowly won his own seat in Sakoli by just 208 votes, had taken over the leadership in 2021. Although the Congress had a strong showing in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, the party's seat-sharing negotiations with allies Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Pawar) created tensions. Despite Patole's assertions that the Congress would lead the post-election government, the alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi, failed to gain traction, falling below the 50-seat mark as the BJP-led Mahayuti dominated with 232 seats. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh described the results as "unexpected" and "inexplicable," indicating that the party would conduct a thorough analysis of its electoral performance. sources
