Dubai vs India Gold Prices: Import Duty and Restrictions

Kannada actress Ranya Rao's recent arrest at Bengaluru airport for smuggling 14.2 kg of gold has intensified scrutiny on gold smuggling and price disparities between India and Dubai. Rao, who is the stepdaughter of a senior IPS officer, allegedly concealed gold bars in her clothing, raising alarms after making four trips to Dubai in just 15 days. Gold is significantly cheaper in Dubai, attributed to tax-free purchases, the absence of import duties, and a competitive market. As of September 2024, the price of 24K gold in Dubai was AED 313.66 per gram, compared to Rs 8,225 per gram in India. In response to smuggling issues, India reduced customs duties on gold imports from 15% to about 6% in July 2024, which spurred a record $10.06 billion in gold imports in August, contributing to a widening trade deficit of $29.65 billion. sources

Controversy Over J&K Fashion Show During Ramadan, Omar Abdullah Responds

A fashion show held in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, during the holy month of Ramzan has drawn widespread condemnation for perceived obscenity, prompting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to acknowledge the public's shock and anger. Abdullah has requested an urgent report on the incident and promised accountability, stating that the images displayed a "complete disregard for local sensitivities." Probe Agency Raids Ex-Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel's House

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids this morning at multiple locations linked to former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his son, Chaitanya Baghel, as part of an investigation into a multi-crore liquor scam. Officials searched at least 14 sites, including the Baghel residence in Bhilai, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), examining crucial documents. Following the raids, Mr. Baghel criticized the ED's actions, claiming they were retaliatory after a court dismissed a long-standing case against him. The probe alleges that a liquor syndicate siphoned approximately Rs 2,161 crore from the state between 2019 and 2022 through illegal commissions, bribes, and unaccounted sales of country liquor. The ED's investigation suggests that no revenue reached the state, with all funds being diverted by the suspects, who also established a cartel for fixed market shares in both local and foreign liquor sales. sources

Having Children May Protect Against Brain Aging, Study Finds

A new study published in the _Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences_ suggests that having children may enhance brain health, potentially keeping it fitter and younger. Involving 37,000 adults, this research is the largest of its kind and indicates that the cognitive stimulation, physical activity, and social interaction associated with parenting can outweigh the challenges of exhaustion and stress. Lead author Avram Holmes noted that increased parental involvement correlates with higher brain connectivity, particularly in areas related to movement and sensation. Notably, the study included over 17,000 fathers, highlighting that their involvement also positively impacts brain health. The findings challenge the perception that parenting adversely affects mental acuity, suggesting instead that parenthood may protect against cognitive decline. However, researchers urge caution, emphasizing the need for further studies beyond the UK to fully understand the implications for combating loneliness and dementia in an aging population. sources
