BENGALURU: Kannada actor Ranya Rao was apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport on March 4 while attempting to smuggle 14 kilograms of gold concealed on her person. Arriving from Dubai, she was stopped by Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials after failing to declare any dutiable goods. Upon examination, gold bars were discovered strapped to her body and hidden in her shoes. A subsequent search of her residence revealed cash amounting to Rs 2.67 crore and jewellery worth over Rs 2 crore, for which she could not provide documentation. Rao, whose travel history indicated intentions to smuggle gold, is facing charges of duty evasion exceeding Rs 4.83 crore. Her arrest is part of a broader investigation, as authorities suspect her involvement in a larger smuggling syndicate. The Karnataka government has initiated a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into the case, including potential police collusion and scrutiny of her step-father, DGP Ramachandra Rao.
