Northeast's Major Insurgent Group Threatens 27-Year Ceasefire

The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN(IM), has threatened to abandon a 27-year ceasefire with India unless a third-party intervenes to address allegations of the Indian government’s "betrayal" of a 2015 Framework Agreement. Thuingaleng Muivah, the group's leader, accused India of failing to recognize the "Nagalim national flag" and "Nagalim constitution," which he claims were promised in the agreement. The NSCN(IM) has conducted over 600 rounds of negotiations with the Indian government since signing the ceasefire in 1997, but tensions have escalated as the group insists it will not wait indefinitely for resolution. Muivah stated that if peaceful means are rejected, the NSCN(IM) would resume violent resistance to defend Nagalim's unique history and sovereignty. The Indian government has yet to respond to these claims. sources

Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Arvind Kejriwal on Pollution and Inflation

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Delhi's former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal during his first public rally for the upcoming assembly elections, highlighting rising pollution and inflation in the capital. Gandhi accused Kejriwal of failing to deliver on his promises to clean Delhi and eliminate corruption, stating, "Pollution, corruption, and inflation are on the rise." In response, Kejriwal dismissed Gandhi's remarks, asserting his focus on national issues rather than personal attacks. Gandhi pledged to conduct a caste survey if Congress regains power, contrasting his party's past achievements under Sheila Dikshit with the current administration's performance. The Congress party, which has not won a seat in the last two elections, is fielding Sandeep Dikshit against Kejriwal. With the AAP and Congress now campaigning separately after their failed Lok Sabha alliance, the Delhi assembly elections are set for February 5, with results to be announced on February 8. sources

Poll Officer Addresses AAP's Voter List Manipulation Allegations

The District Election Officer of New Delhi has addressed allegations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding voter list manipulation by the BJP. Following a meeting with Election Commission officials, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal stated that each BJP MP has submitted numerous applications for voter roll additions. However, the election officer emphasized that applications for changes to the electoral roll are thoroughly scrutinized and do not guarantee automatic approval. Additionally, the officer dismissed AAP's claims of BJP candidates distributing items like bed sheets and jackets, citing a lack of credible evidence. The Model Code of Conduct has been in effect since January 7, and Delhi's elections are scheduled for February 5, with results expected on February 8. sources

RTI Not for Curiosity: Delhi University on PM's Degree

The University of Delhi has challenged a Central Information Commission (CIC) order mandating the disclosure of information regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree, arguing that the Right to Information (RTI) Act should not be used to satisfy third-party curiosity. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the university, stated that student information is held in a "fiduciary capacity" and cannot be shared with outsiders under Section 8(1)(e) of the RTI Act. The CIC had previously allowed an RTI request from activist Neeraj for records of all students who passed the BA exam in 1978, which included Modi. The university described the CIC's directive as "arbitrary" and detrimental to the administration, asserting that it undermines the purpose of the RTI Act. The case will be heard again later in January. sources

Minister Rejects Zuckerberg's Claim on India Election Results

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has refuted Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's assertion that most incumbent governments, including India's, lost the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. In a recent interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a global erosion of trust in governments, resulting in electoral losses for incumbents. Vaishnaw countered this narrative, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive victory, reaffirming public trust with over 640 million voters participating in the elections. The minister emphasized that this outcome reflects good governance under Modi’s leadership. Zuckerberg's comments were part of a broader discussion about the impact of the pandemic on elections worldwide, but they have drawn criticism, particularly regarding misinformation and its potential consequences for political stability. sources

NDTV Explainer: Importance of Z-Morh Tunnel in Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and accessibility to the region. Spanning 6.5 km at an altitude of 8,562 feet, the tunnel connects Gagangir to Sonamarg, providing all-weather access that mitigates the dangers of avalanche-prone routes during winter. The project is expected to bolster the local economy and promote tourism, positioning Sonamarg as a winter sports destination akin to Gulmarg. Additionally, the Z-Morh tunnel will facilitate easier travel to Ladakh, reducing the need for overnight stays in Kargil. Alongside the upcoming Zojila tunnel, which aims for completion by 2028, these developments will enhance military logistics and vigilance along the Line of Control. Modi also paid tribute to seven victims, including six construction workers, who were killed in a recent terrorist attack related to the tunnel's construction. sources

Congress: The Emperor's True Nature Revealed

The Congress party, once viewed as the backbone of the opposition alliance known as INDIA, now faces significant challenges as regional parties begin to distance themselves, questioning its leadership and relevance. Tejaswi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal suggested that the INDIA grouping's focus should solely be on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, signaling potential fractures within the alliance. As regional parties express support for Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party ahead of Delhi elections, the Congress is perceived as an obstacle to unity. With past electoral successes fading, the Congress struggles to maintain its influence, leading to concerns about its ability to lead the opposition against a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party. Internal rivalries and historical grievances further complicate the situation, leaving Rahul Gandhi and the Congress at a crossroads, where their capacity to adapt and strategize will determine the future of the opposition coalition. sources
