Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the revered Somnath temple in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district on Sunday, where he prayed for the health and prosperity of the nation. His visit followed a three-day state trip, which began with a stop at Vantara, an animal rescue and rehabilitation center in Jamnagar. Modi's pilgrimage to Somnath, the first of the 12 jyotirlings, fulfilled a personal resolution made after the recent Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which attracted over 66.21 crore devotees. He expressed gratitude for the successful event and dedicated its achievement to Lord Somnath. Later, Modi arrived in Sasan Gir to chair a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife on World Wildlife Day, where he will also engage with local women forest staff. The government has allocated over Rs 2,900 crore for Project Lion, aimed at conserving the Asiatic lion population in Gujarat.

The police approached Singh at his hotel following reports of a potential suicide threat he made on social media. Upon questioning, he produced the ganja and suggested that if it were illegal, all the seers at the Maha Kumbh festival, who openly consumed it, should also be arrested. Singh, who asserts he is an aerospace engineer from IIT-Bombay, dismissed the suicide allegations as a pretext for police action. He also criticized the First Information Report (FIR) as nonsensical, arguing that many seers partook in similar substances without consequence. Previously, Singh faced a ban from the Juna Akhara camp, with its spokesperson labeling him an "educated lunatic." The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Published: Mar 03 2025, 6 pmeznews.inA groundbreaking study published in the preprint database _bioRxiv_ challenges the conventional understanding of European skin colour, revealing that the majority of Europeans had dark skin as recently as 3,000 years ago. Led by Guido Barbujani from the University of Ferrara, the research analyzed the genomes of 348 individuals dating from 1,700 to 45,000 years ago, finding that 63% had dark skin while only 8% exhibited pale skin. The study indicates that the prevalence of lighter skin tones increased only around 3,000 years ago, with half of the individuals studied still having dark or medium skin during the Copper and Iron Ages. The researchers, who extracted DNA from ancient bones and teeth, also noted a peak in light eye pigmentation during the Mesolithic period. While previous theories suggested that lighter skin evolved for vitamin D synthesis in low sunlight, experts advise caution in interpreting these findings, as they may not fully represent ancient populations.

She claimed his reply indicated he was under the influence of his father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth, who was expelled over the weekend for allegedly dividing the party. In a series of posts on X, Mayawati criticized Akash for failing to demonstrate remorse or maturity, stating that his response lacked political integrity. She emphasized that the decision to expel him was in line with the party's commitment to the principles of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and the discipline of founder Kanshiram. Akash Anand had previously been removed from key party positions last year, only to be reinstated as National Coordinator a month later, reinforcing his status as her potential successor.
Published: Mar 03 2025, 5 pmeznews.inMaharashtra's political landscape is increasingly focused on a perceived rift between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, despite both leaders' denials. The ruling Mahayuti coalition, which came to power through defections, is facing scrutiny as the opposition, led by the Maha Vikas Aghadi, seeks to exploit this division. Shinde's recent absence from key government events has fueled speculation about his discontent following his role reversal with Fadnavis after the BJP's electoral success. The opposition's recent criticism intensified after the harassment of Union Minister Raksha Khadse's daughter, raising concerns about public safety in a BJP-led state. Amidst these tensions, Shinde's faction has been accused of links to the attackers, while Fadnavis's recent decisions, including cancelling contracts approved by Shinde, suggest underlying discord. This ongoing strife may threaten the stability of the coalition, which relies on Shinde's Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP for a majority in the assembly.

While the appointment of the CPC's chairman and members is pending, attention is focused on the terms of reference (ToR), expected to be finalised by April 2025. The National Council - Joint Consultative Mechanism (NC-JCM) has proposed key areas for the CPC to address, including restructuring pay and allowances, revising the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme, and integrating Dearness Allowance (DA) into Basic Pay. Additionally, there are calls to consider a minimum salary based on five family units instead of three, reflecting modern expenses and responsibilities. Current salary structures, based on the 7th Pay Commission, may see adjustments with a potential increase in the fitment factor from 2.57 to 2.86.

Justice Surya Kant remarked that young individuals often consider themselves "oversmart," highlighting Raina's remarks made abroad. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta noted Raina's mockery of the legal proceedings. Raina's show faced backlash after podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia made crude remarks about parents and sex, igniting public outrage and parliamentary debate. Following the incident, Raina removed all related videos and expressed his cooperation with authorities, while Allahbadia issued an apology for his comments. The Supreme Court temporarily barred Allahbadia from producing new content but later allowed him to resume his podcast, emphasizing the need to balance morality with freedom of expression as the Centre prepares to establish guidelines for online content regulation.
Published: Mar 03 2025, 4 pmeznews.inAs Maharashtra's Budget Session commenced, Nationalist Congress Party MLA Jitendra Awhad made headlines by entering the Assembly in handcuffs to protest the treatment of Indians being deported from the United States. Awhad condemned the shackling of deported individuals, claiming that the Indian government is failing to address the injustices faced by its citizens abroad. His protest follows similar demonstrations by CPI(ML) MLAs in Patna and Congress MLAs in Gujarat, who have also expressed outrage over the deportation of illegal immigrants from the US. Over 300 Indians have been deported in recent weeks, prompting criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on the issue. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that deportation procedures may involve restraints but emphasized that women and children are not shackled. Critics argue that the Indian government should assert its dignity in the face of such treatment.
Published: Mar 03 2025, 3 pmeznews.inCongress spokesperson Shama Mohamed's recent comments regarding Team India captain Rohit Sharma have sparked controversy within her party and drawn criticism from political opponents. Mohamed described Sharma as "fat for a sportsman" and criticized his performance, stating he should lose weight and questioning his captaincy. While the Congress party distanced itself from her remarks, asserting they do not reflect its views, Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Ray supported her stance, citing Sharma's inconsistent performance. The BJP seized on the opportunity to attack Congress, with spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari questioning the party's patriotism and comparing their criticism to their political failures. Rohit Sharma, who became captain in 2023, has led India to significant victories, including a T20 World Cup and two Asia Cups, and has an impressive record in the IPL as captain of the Mumbai Indians.
Published: Mar 03 2025, 2 pmeznews.inFollowing the recent Oval Office confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump, the aftermath raises significant concerns for Ukraine, the U.S., and global geopolitics. While Zelensky's defiance may resonate domestically, Ukraine faces a loss of U.S. security guarantees and potential withdrawal of support, exacerbating its vulnerability against Russia. The U.S. risks damaging its credibility as a superpower, having failed to secure access to Ukraine's resources and by renegotiating aid into loans. Trump's public reprimand of Zelensky has also reignited past controversies, undermining his standing. Although some view Russian President Vladimir Putin as the sole beneficiary, the fallout complicates the Kremlin’s objectives, potentially delaying conflict resolution. This incident may prompt European nations to reconsider their defense strategies, while countries like China and India could find their interests adversely affected. The situation signals a turbulent period ahead for international relations, particularly concerning U.S. foreign policy.

Pitbulls are known for their aggressive nature and have a history of attacking people, including their owners. In response to increasing dog attacks, last year the Indian government urged states to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 breeds deemed dangerous, including pitbulls, American Bulldogs, and Rottweilers. Other breeds targeted for a ban include the Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, and Cane Corso, among others, as part of efforts to enhance public safety.
