Reality Show's 'Sex Positions' Clip Provokes Outrage, MPs Respond

A controversial clip from the OTT reality show 'House Arrest,' hosted by Ajaz Khan, has sparked outrage on social media, prompting Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi to question why the ULLU streaming app has not been banned by the Indian government. Chaturvedi, who has previously raised concerns regarding explicit content on OTT platforms, highlighted that the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting had banned 18 such platforms last year for obscene material, yet notable apps like ULLU and Alt Balaji were excluded. The nearly two-minute clip features Khan discussing Kama Sutra positions and asking contestants to demonstrate them. Following the Supreme Court's recent notice to the Centre and various platforms regarding the regulation of obscene content, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey assured that action would be taken against the show. The video has drawn sharp criticism online, with many users expressing dismay at the declining standards of television content. sources

Nepali Student Dies at Bhubaneswar KIIT, Second Case Since February

In a significant move towards digital healthcare enhancement, the Delhi government announced the rollout of a Health Management Information System (HMIS) across all hospitals, as stated by Health Minister Pankaj Singh. This initiative will establish a centralised healthcare control room featuring a dashboard to monitor real-time data, including bed availability, medicine stocks, and diagnostic trends, aimed at improving decision-making and governance. In a separate incident, a 20-year-old Nepalese student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar was found dead in her hostel room, raising concerns following a similar suicide case of another Nepalese student just two and a half months prior. The student, pursuing a B.Tech in Computer Science, was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan, although her identity remains unconfirmed. Police have stated the incident appears to be a suicide, but KIIT authorities have yet to comment. sources

Settlement Day: Kuki Leader Discusses Territorial Integrity

In a recent discussion, Seilen Haokip, spokesperson for the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), expressed optimism about the Kuki insurgent groups achieving separation from Manipur during the current President's rule. He clarified that the term "territorial integrity of Manipur," included in the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement, is increasingly irrelevant to the Kuki tribes seeking a separate administration. Haokip criticized the previous state government's interference in peace talks, asserting that the current political climate offers a unique opportunity for progress. The Kuki tribes, who have faced ethnic violence and displacement, are pushing for 'Kukiland,' while the Meitei community opposes any division. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 260 deaths and the displacement of nearly 50,000 individuals. Haokip emphasized that the Kuki groups remain committed to their political demands and have not compromised their objectives despite internal challenges. sources

Man Loses Custody of Daughter After 15 Days Without Cooking

In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court of India denied a separated father's custody of his eight-year-old daughter, citing his failure to provide home-cooked meals as a significant concern. Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta emphasized that the girl's health and overall development were at risk due to her father's reliance on restaurant food, particularly given his busy professional life in Singapore. While the Kerala High Court previously permitted the father to spend 15 days a month with his daughter, the Supreme Court determined that the home environment was unsuitable for her growth, especially as she would lack companionship during these periods. The court also criticized a similar custody arrangement for the father's three-year-old son, deeming it "grossly unfair." Instead, the Supreme Court granted the father limited custody on alternate weekends and scheduled video calls, prioritizing the children's emotional and nutritional needs. sources

Supreme Court: Mandate Prescribing Generic Drugs, No Brand Names

The Supreme Court of India has mandated that doctors prescribe only generic medicines, following concerns regarding unethical practices by pharmaceutical companies, including bribery to promote overpriced brands. During a hearing on a petition advocating for stricter regulations, Justice Sandeep Mehta emphasized that nationwide implementation of this directive could significantly reduce medical costs and curb drug overuse. The petition highlighted allegations that pharmaceutical firms incentivize doctors to prescribe unnecessary or costly medications, contributing to increased healthcare expenses and potential drug dependence among patients. The court noted that such issues could be mitigated through a statutory requirement for generic prescriptions, referencing a recent executive order in Rajasthan aimed at similar goals. The discussion also included claims about substantial expenditures by drug manufacturers on promotional freebies for doctors, underscoring the need for accountability in the industry. sources

Air India Warns of $600 Million Loss from Pakistan Ban

Air India could incur up to $600 million in additional costs if Pakistan's airspace ban on Indian airlines remains in effect for a year, according to a company letter obtained by Reuters. The ban, which is a response to diplomatic tensions following a terrorist attack linked to Pakistan, will lead to longer flight routes and increased fuel expenses, significantly impacting Air India's operations and potentially resulting in annual losses exceeding $591 million. The airline has requested government subsidies to alleviate these financial burdens, emphasizing the need for support for affected international flights. Other airlines, like IndiGo, are also feeling the strain, with some flights experiencing extended travel times. Amidst these challenges, the Indian government is reportedly considering various measures, including potential tax breaks and collaboration with China for overflight clearances, to mitigate the impact on the aviation sector. sources
