Top Court Reserves Verdict After Waqf Hearings in Hinduism

The Supreme Court of India is currently deliberating the status of waqfs—charitable donations in Islam—amidst arguments over the Waqf Amendment Law. Petitioners claim the law infringes on fundamental rights, asserting waqfs are essential to Islamic practice, while the government contends they are not a core religious requirement, allowing for better management of waqf properties, which include secular institutions. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal emphasized that waqfs are a dedication to God, contrasting with other religions' charitable practices. The court has raised concerns about the government's proposal to appoint non-Muslims to waqf boards, arguing it could undermine the autonomy of Islamic affairs. Additionally, the law's requirement that only practicing Muslims can donate has been criticized as discriminatory. The Supreme Court has reserved its decision on a plea to halt the implementation of the law, which has faced significant opposition for its perceived draconian measures. sources

Armed Mob Kills Bengal Tiger in Assam, Skins It

A Royal Bengal Tiger that had been terrorizing villagers in Assam's Golaghat district was killed by a mob on Wednesday after being found in a paddy field in Dusutimukh. The adult male tiger, which villagers claimed had attacked livestock, was surrounded and attacked with sticks and sharp weapons. Parts of its carcass, including skin, ears, teeth, and legs, were removed by the mob, prompting the forest department to register a case. Local MLA Mrinal Saikia condemned the killing, describing it as "unfortunate and regrettable," and called for improved government measures to manage wildlife emergencies. Villagers expressed frustration over the lack of action from authorities, stating they had lived in fear for weeks. Forest officials later recovered the carcass in the presence of a magistrate, while police are working to identify those involved in the mob attack. sources

Bengaluru Man Criticizes Absence of Kannada in Loan Documents

A social media post by Bengaluru resident Syed Aleem has ignited a discussion on linguistic accessibility in banking after he struggled to understand a vehicle loan document available only in Hindi and English. Aleem took approximately 90 minutes to comprehend the complex language of the agreement, which included crucial details about car parts and penalties. He raised concerns about how native Kannada speakers, who may not be proficient in English or Hindi, are expected to navigate such documents. While he suggested that loan agreements should ideally be provided in both Kannada and English, he refrained from naming the specific bank, emphasizing that this issue extends beyond a single institution. The post garnered mixed reactions, with some supporting his call for inclusive language options, while others dismissed his concerns, arguing that understanding English should suffice. This highlights ongoing debates about language politics and accessibility in India’s banking sector. sources

Top Court Criticizes ED for Tamil Nadu Raids

The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for exceeding its authority during recent raids on Tamil Nadu's state-run liquor shops, instructing the agency to cease its investigations into corruption allegations. The court described the ED's actions as a violation of federal governance principles, following raids conducted in March and last week related to alleged corruption in liquor transportation and licensing. Chief Justice BR Gavai highlighted the need for the ED to focus on individuals rather than corporations. The ruling was welcomed by the ruling DMK party, which accused the ED of political harassment. Tamil Nadu's Excise Minister, S. Muthusamy, criticized the ED's conduct as politically motivated, asserting that no substantial evidence had been found to support the allegations. The controversy arises as the DMK and the opposition AIADMK prepare for upcoming Assembly elections, with accusations of misuse of federal agencies by the BJP. sources

Jaishankar: Don't Pretend Pakistan Isn't Involved in Terrorism

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during his visit to the Netherlands, reiterated accusations against Pakistan regarding its involvement in terrorism, dismissing Islamabad's claims of ignorance about terror groups operating within its borders. Addressing a question from Dutch daily De Volkskrant, he asserted, "Stop pretending Pakistan is not involved in terrorist attacks on India," and emphasized that major terrorists are active in Pakistani cities. Jaishankar linked recent hostilities to a "barbaric attack" in Jammu and Kashmir, attributing the motives of the attackers to the "extreme religious outlook" of Pakistan's Army chief. He stressed that terrorism should not be linked to the Kashmir issue, which he described as a historical fact of illegal occupation by Pakistan. Jaishankar also rejected any claims of U.S. mediation in the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, asserting that the Kashmir dispute is a bilateral matter that must be resolved by the two nations. sources

Jaishankar Discusses Pahalgam and Pakistan Army Chief's Extremism

The recent military conflict between India and Pakistan was ignited by a "barbaric" terrorist attack on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, according to Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. He attributed the attack to the extremist views of Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who has been accused of fostering religious discord. Jaishankar emphasized that the ceasefire established on May 12 was a result of direct negotiations between India and Pakistan, dismissing claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump of his involvement. Following the attack, India initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan, which resulted in a retaliatory missile exchange. Jaishankar has reiterated that Pakistan must dismantle its terrorist infrastructure before any peace talks can proceed, highlighting ongoing tensions and the Indian military's readiness to respond to future threats. sources
