Stunning images of Mercury have been captured by the BepiColombo spacecraft during its sixth and final flyby before entering orbit in 2026. Launched in 2018 and built by Airbus, BepiColombo flew just a few hundred kilometres above Mercury's north pole, revealing "icy craters" that remain in permanent shadow, as well as sunlit northern plains, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). Notably, the dark craters, including Prokofiev and Kandinsky, may contain frozen water, making them some of the coldest locations in the Solar System. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher announced these findings in a recent press briefing, emphasizing the significance of the data gathered. BepiColombo's main mission will commence in two years, with plans to explore Mercury's enigmatic characteristics and the reasons behind its thin rocky veneer despite a massive iron core. The spacecraft will ultimately deploy two orbiters to further study the planet in 2027.
