India is poised to join an elite group of nations capable of spacecraft docking with its upcoming SpaDeX mission, set to launch on December 30, 2024, from Sriharikota. The Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) will involve the docking, interlocking, and undocking of two satellites, crucial for future missions, including Chandrayaan 4 and India's planned space station, the Bharatiya Antriksh Station, by 2035. Currently, only the US, Russia, and China possess this technology. The mission, using a PSLV-C60 rocket, will deploy two 220-kilogram spacecraft into low-Earth orbit. Following deployment, scientists will execute a series of complex maneuvers in January. Successful completion will mark India as the fourth nation with docking capabilities, enhancing its future space endeavors, including in-space robotics and the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV). Additionally, the mission includes the POEM-4 initiative, which will explore microgravity with various payloads from ISRO and non-government entities.
