Global firms target Indian market for growth

Global companies are increasingly eyeing India for expansion while planning to scale back their operations in the US, according to a Gartner study. The research revealed that 14% of CEOs are looking to enter the Indian market, while 30% aim to reduce their US presence, citing negative impacts of US policies on supply chain strategies. David Furlonger, a VP Analyst at Gartner, noted that CEOs are seeking geographic rebalancing to mitigate supply chain disruptions and tap into new markets. Greyhound Research highlighted that India is becoming the primary growth vector, with significant investments earmarked for data centres and logistics, as Indian Global Capability Centres take on core functions previously based in the US. Analysts attribute India's appeal to its size, growth potential, youthful population, and digital readiness, while geopolitical alignment between the US and India enhances the attractiveness of long-term investments. However, experts assert that companies will not completely exit the US market, given its status as the world's largest economy. sources

India-Canada FTA talks resume after two-year trade freeze

India and Canada are set to resume negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) that were halted in September 2023 amid rising tensions over pro-Khalistani activities. The announcement follows the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment, which aimed to restore business relations after a diplomatic standoff triggered by accusations against Indian officials regarding the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. "Vishrut Rana: Weak Growth Limits Fiscal Improvement"

Domestic demand will remain a crucial driver of India's economy, according to Vishrut Rana, an economist at S&P Global Ratings. In an interview with _businessline_, he noted that while the impact of US tariffs has been manageable, certain sectors like textiles and seafood are feeling the strain. S&P Global has maintained its growth projections at 6.7% for FY27, bolstered by fiscal stimulus from GST reforms, which are expected to enhance consumption. However, the ongoing wait for a US trade agreement poses a challenge, as India's economy is predominantly domestically oriented. S&P has also lowered its inflation forecast to 2.5%, anticipating stable food prices, although next year's monsoon could introduce volatility. Key challenges include ensuring employment amid automation and attracting capital flows, as the rupee faces pressure from external uncertainties. Overall, while growth remains resilient, vigilance is needed regarding fiscal balance and external conditions. sources

Afghan airline nearly collides at Delhi airport on wrong runway

A potential disaster was averted at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday when an Ariana Afghan Airlines flight from Kabul mistakenly landed on a runway while another aircraft was taking off. The incident involved flight FG-311, which was cleared to land on runway 29L but instead touched down on runway 29R. The pilot reported losing the Instrument Landing System (ILS) guidance at 4 nautical miles, leading to a visual approach landing on the incorrect runway. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the incident, with the pilot claiming that both ILS systems malfunctioned during the approach. The pilot also noted that they were not informed of any deviation by air traffic control. The DGCA is currently assessing whether the issue originated from the aircraft's ILS system. sources

Centre's ₹1-lakh crore scheme boosts edible oil industry opportunities

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) has praised the government's ₹1-lakh-crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme, viewing it as a pivotal move to enhance the Indian edible oil sector. SEA President Sanjeev Asthana highlighted that the scheme's provision of long-term, low-cost financing for high-impact research could foster advancements in oilseed varieties and climate-resilient farming, ultimately reducing import dependence. Additionally, he welcomed the ₹25,060-crore Export Promotion Mission, which aims to streamline export processes for MSMEs. Asthana also urged the Department of Agriculture to reinstate weekly crop data updates, crucial for market planning. Despite projections of increased oilseed production, he noted that import levels remain high, with the edible oil import bill rising to ₹1.61 lakh crore. Furthermore, a recent customs duty reduction on crude pomace olive oil was welcomed as a means to make this healthier option more accessible to consumers. sources

India, Canada to Restart FTA Negotiations: Piyush Goyal

India and Canada have agreed to resume negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at boosting bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, as announced by Union Minister Piyush Goyal during the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment in New Delhi. Goyal emphasized that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) would enhance investor confidence and reflect the trust between the two nations, which he described as natural allies. The discussions come after a period of strained relations following allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding a potential Indian link to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India dismissed as "absurd." Despite a dip in imports from Canada, India's exports rose by 9.8% in the last fiscal year. The renewed dialogue follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussions with Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at the G7 summit in June. sources

IMD keeps cyclone watch as new low forms over Comorin

A complex weather system is developing around Sri Lanka and south Tamil Nadu, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of a potential depression forming over the south-east Bay of Bengal, which could intensify into a tropical cyclone by Wednesday. Concurrently, an upper air cyclonic circulation near Comorin is expected to deepen into a low-pressure area, creating a competitive scenario between the two systems. The IMD predicts that the Comorin low will be absorbed by the advancing cyclone, which will be named Senyar, before it moves towards Myanmar, potentially triggering fresh weather activity in the south-east Arabian Sea. Heavy rainfall is forecasted across several regions, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in various coastal areas. Rainfall has already been recorded in multiple locations, with Minicoy in Lakshadweep receiving the highest at 11 cm. sources

S&P Global keeps India’s FY26 GDP forecast at 6.5%

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised India's growth forecast for the fiscal year 2025-26 to 6.6%, an increase of 20 basis points, while S&P Global has maintained its projection at 6.5%. The global rating agency anticipates a growth of 6.7% for fiscal 2026-27, contingent on India securing a trade deal with the US, which could alleviate uncertainties affecting export-oriented manufacturing. However, S&P Global has lowered its FY 2026-27 forecast to 6.2% due to the impact of increased US tariffs. The World Bank also adjusted its FY 2026 forecast to 6.5% but cut its FY 2027 estimate to 6.3%. Despite a nearly 4.3% depreciation of the Indian rupee this year, strong domestic consumption is expected to drive growth, supported by lower GST rates and tax cuts. Inflation forecasts have been adjusted, with a current projection of 2.5% but an expected rise to 5% next fiscal year. sources
