Centre Approves ₹62,000 Crore Deal for Indian Attack Helicopter

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved a landmark deal to acquire 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for over Rs 62,000 crore, marking the largest order in HAL's history. The helicopters, known as Prachand, will be manufactured at HAL's facilities in Bengaluru and Tumkur and will be allocated to the Indian Army (90 units) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) for operations near the borders with China and Pakistan. Notably, the LCH can operate at high altitudes, making it suitable for challenging terrains like Siachen and eastern Ladakh. This initiative aligns with the government's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat programs. The government has also placed significant orders for other indigenous systems, including 83 Light Combat Aircraft and 307 ATAGS howitzers, further enhancing its defence capabilities. sources

Turkey Protests: Erdogan Confronts His Greatest Crisis

Turkey is experiencing unprecedented protests following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges, with over 1,500 people detained, including journalists. A massive demonstration organized by the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) drew hundreds of thousands demanding early elections, three years ahead of the scheduled 2028 date. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the protests as “street terror,” yet they emerge amid his recent foreign policy successes, including diplomatic victories in Syria and strengthened ties in South and Southeast Asia. Despite Erdogan's long-standing rule, his grip on power appears increasingly fragile, as evidenced by his coalition's narrow victory in the contentious 2023 elections. Imamoglu, viewed as a significant rival, faces barriers to future candidacy following his arrest and the revocation of his university degree. The protests may signal a growing opposition movement, reminiscent of the early unrest that contributed to the downfall of other leaders in the region. sources
