Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital, was found guilty by a local court today. A former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, Roy was convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rape, murder, and causing death. He maintains his innocence, alleging he is being framed and questioning the integrity of an unnamed Indian Police Service officer. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Anirban Das, assured Roy he would have the opportunity to speak during the sentencing hearing scheduled for Monday at 12:30 pm. The judge also criticized the actions of police and hospital officials that emerged during the trial, which began in November and followed the crime committed on August 9. Roy will remain in judicial custody until the sentencing.
