ISRO Rocket Fails Shortly After Launch; Expert Panel Formed

ISRO's attempt to launch the PSLV-C61 rocket carrying the EOS-9 Earth observation satellite ended in failure on Sunday, just seven minutes after takeoff. In response, the agency has established a National Failure Analysis Committee, comprising experts from prestigious institutions like IISc and IITs, to investigate the incident, with a report expected by mid-next month. The PSLV, known for its reliability with only four failures in 63 launches, remains the only rocket currently grounded due to a suspected malfunction in its third stage motor. Experts suggest a possible rupture in the motor's fibre casing may have caused the issue, though investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the upcoming launch of the GSLV F-16, which will carry the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar Satellite, a $1.5 billion project. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan noted a drop in chamber pressure as a key observation during the analysis. sources

Most COVID Cases in India Mild, Managed at Home

NEW DELHI: Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in some countries, most reported cases in India are mild and under home care, according to official sources. The Union Health Secretary reviewed the situation with health officials, noting that cases are primarily emerging from states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are actively monitoring respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. While reports indicate an uptick in cases in places like Singapore and Hong Kong, officials assert that the circulating variants are not more transmissible or severe than previous ones. Currently, India has detected one case of the new variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of LF.7, both classified as Variants Under Monitoring by the WHO. As of May 19, India had 257 active cases, with recent mild cases reported in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. sources

Mysore Sandal: Local Pride vs. National Myth

The recent endorsement of Mysore Sandal Soap by actress Tamannaah Bhatia has sparked criticism, highlighting a disconnect between the brand's marketing strategy and its cultural roots. The Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) invested Rs 6.2 crore in this "pan-India" approach, aiming to modernize its image, yet this move appears misguided. The outrage stems not from Tamannaah's involvement but from the perceived neglect of local pride and the brand's authentic connection with its consumers. Many Kannada actors would have supported the brand for free, reflecting regional loyalty. This marketing misstep also perpetuates outdated beauty standards, contrasting with successful campaigns like Dove's that celebrate real people. Mysore Sandal Soap, a staple for many in Karnataka, thrives on relatability, not aspirational marketing. Ultimately, KSDL's strategy risks alienating its core audience, undermining the brand's legacy rooted in local pride and community connection. sources

Study Explains Why Some People Attract More Mosquitoes

Certain individuals attract mosquitoes more than others due to specific skin odours, particularly carboxylic acids, according to a 2022 study from Rockefeller University published in the journal *Cell*. The research revealed that individuals with higher levels of these acids are up to 100 times more appealing to female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which transmit diseases such as dengue and Zika. Researchers collected skin scent samples using nylon stockings, discovering that one participant, dubbed 'subject 33', was exceptionally attractive to mosquitoes. Lead researcher Leslie Vosshall noted that the unique skin chemical composition plays a significant role in this attraction. However, the study acknowledged limitations, as it could not isolate carboxylic acids to confirm their necessity in mosquito attraction. With mosquito-borne diseases affecting approximately 700 million people annually, these findings could inform the development of more effective repellents. sources

Harvard Dermatologist Alerts: Key Skin Cancer Warning Signs

Skin cancer remains the most common cancer worldwide, with millions diagnosed annually. In 2022, the World Health Organisation reported around 330,000 new melanoma cases, leading to nearly 60,000 deaths. Dr. Daniel Sugai, a dermatologist, emphasizes the importance of seeking medical advice for persistent pimples lasting over a month, as they may indicate basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most prevalent skin cancer, affecting 3.6 million Americans each year. Sugai warns that spots that bleed or fail to heal could signal BCC, which often appears as shiny bumps or flat, scaly patches. Notably, BCC can present differently in patients of colour, often appearing hyperpigmented. With early detection being crucial for effective treatment, Sugai urges individuals to monitor their skin closely and consult a dermatologist for any unusual changes. sources

Non-BJP Chief Ministers Demand Central Funds and Water at Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for enhanced collaboration among states to achieve a developed India during the Niti Aayog meeting on Saturday. However, opposition chief ministers voiced concerns regarding resource sharing. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the need for the Centre to increase fund allocations and tax revenue shares, arguing that the current 33.16% share of Union tax revenue is insufficient. He urged for the share to be raised to 50%, highlighting that reduced tax devolution and rising state contributions to central schemes are straining state finances. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann raised a water-sharing dispute with Haryana, advocating for the construction of a Yamuna-Sutlej-Link canal, as Punjab faces a water shortage. The meeting saw participation from most chief ministers, with notable absences from leaders of West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, and Bihar. sources

Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant for Rahul Gandhi's Defamation Case

The MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, has issued a non-bailable warrant for senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a 2018 defamation case linked to comments he made about then-BJP National President Amit Shah. The court has mandated that Gandhi appear in person on June 26. The case originated from remarks made by Gandhi during a Congress event, where he suggested that a "murderer" could not lead the Congress party, a statement interpreted by complainant Pratap Katiyar as defamatory towards Shah. Initially, a bailable warrant was issued in April 2022 due to Gandhi's lack of response, but this escalated to a non-bailable warrant in February 2024. Despite attempts by Gandhi's legal team to secure an exemption from personal attendance, the court rejected these requests. Additionally, a separate defamation case against Gandhi is ongoing in Sultanpur, also related to his comments about Shah. sources

Woman's Son Used as Collateral Found in Grave

A duck rearer in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, has been arrested for holding a tribal woman and her three children as bonded laborers over a Rs 25,000 loan. The man, who claimed the woman's nine-year-old son died of jaundice, secretly buried the child's body in Tamil Nadu after demanding the boy be left as collateral while the mother arranged repayment. After the mother, Anakamma, managed to gather the money, the duck rearer falsely claimed her son had run away. Concerned for her child's safety, she sought police assistance, leading to the man's confession about the boy's death. He, along with his family, was arrested under multiple laws, including the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act and the Child Labour Act. The boy's body was exhumed for a post-mortem, with officials noting that the Yanadi tribal community is particularly vulnerable to such exploitation. sources
