Philanthropist Sudha Murty visited the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where she participated in serving Mahaprasad at the ISKCON camp. Dressed in a green saree, she was seen distributing chapattis to thousands of devotees, as ISKCON, in collaboration with the Adani Group, prepares meals for over 40,000 attendees daily. The kitchen, equipped with modern facilities, can produce 10,000 rotis per hour. Murty expressed her excitement about the event, referring to Maha Kumbh as "Teerthraj," and highlighted the significance of performing tarpan for her ancestors. AAP, BJP, Congress Clash Over Punjabi VIPs' Police Letters

In a rare show of unity, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress jointly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5. Their accusations targeted AAP-ruled Punjab police for allegedly campaigning for AAP candidates and the presence of numerous Punjab-registered vehicles in Delhi, which BJP's Parvesh Verma claimed posed a security risk during Republic Day preparations. Verma alleged these vehicles were used to distribute liquor and money to influence voters. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit echoed these concerns, calling for the Election Commission's intervention. AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, vehemently defended their party, accusing the BJP of insulting Punjabis and engaging in divisive politics. The Delhi police and Punjab police have exchanged letters regarding the movement of AAP leaders, emphasizing compliance with election protocols. The election follows AAP's significant victory in 2020, where they won 62 out of 70 seats. sources

Man Escapes Car Flip Attempt; Bengaluru Police Responds

A video posted by user Deep Darshan on X has raised alarms about safety on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, showing a man brandishing a wooden log in an apparent attempt to obstruct vehicles and cause accidents. The footage, captured on January 20 near Kengeri, suggests a potential motive of robbery, as the individual seemed to aim for a collision to snatch valuables. Mr. Darshan highlighted the incident's danger, prompting a response from Bengaluru Police, who requested further details for investigation. Commuters expressed their concerns online, with one user noting the increasing risks on the highway, especially during evening hours, while another suggested driving in the middle lane for safety. The expressway, already criticized for its accident history and lack of proper policing, continues to be a focal point for public safety discussions as incidents like this provoke widespread unease. sources

CBI Seeks Death Penalty for RG Kar Rape Convict

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has petitioned the Calcutta High Court for the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, convicted of rape and murder in the RG Kar case, after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court. The CBI argued that the West Bengal government's petition for the death penalty was not maintainable, stating that only the union government or the CBI could contest the sentence's inadequacy. This has sparked tensions with the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, which expressed outrage over the ruling, emphasizing the need for strict justice against heinous crimes. Justice Anirban Das acknowledged the crime's severity but highlighted the lack of sufficient evidence from the CBI to classify it as a 'rarest of rare' case for capital punishment. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is set to resume hearings on the matter, having previously declined to transfer the trial outside West Bengal. sources

Next 20 Months Could Determine Karnataka's Congressional Future

As Karnataka's Congress government marks 20 months in office, the next two years will be pivotal for its political survival, given the state's historical trend of ruling parties struggling in their second term. Success hinges on three critical principles: efficient governance, party unity, and social harmony. Past administrations often faltered by neglecting these factors, leading to a cycle of political turnover since 1985. A recent Lokniti study suggests that the Congress's return to power could depend on its perceived performance in fulfilling key promises, particularly among women voters. However, internal strife, notably between leaders Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar, poses a threat to stability, despite the BJP's own issues with disunity. Furthermore, maintaining social harmony and public confidence will be essential, as any failure in these areas could significantly undermine the government's credibility and electoral prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. sources

Two Student Suicides in Kota, Rajasthan This Month

In a tragic series of events, a student from Assam, identified as Parag, died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, on Wednesday, marking the second suicide in the town within hours and the sixth this month. Earlier, the body of Afsha Sheikh, a medical aspirant from Gujarat, was found hanging in her hostel room. These incidents contribute to ongoing concerns about student suicides in Kota, a hub for competitive exam preparation. This month alone has seen multiple suicides, including four others linked to students preparing for the JEE and NEET entrance exams. Last year, Kota reported 17 student suicides, a significant decrease from 23 in 2023. The Rajasthan government has implemented measures to address this crisis, including stricter regulations for coaching centers and sensitivity training for hostel staff, aiming to reduce the alarming trend of student suicides in the area. sources

JDU Withdraws Support from BJP Government in Manipur

In a significant political shift, the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), led by Nitish Kumar, has withdrawn its support from the N Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur, with its sole MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, now seated in the Opposition. This decision, while not destabilizing the government, sends a strong message as the JDU is a crucial ally of the BJP at both the national and Bihar state levels. The move follows the earlier withdrawal of support by the National People's Party in Meghalaya. The JDU had won six seats in the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections, but five of its MLAs defected to the BJP, which now holds 37 of the 60 Assembly seats. JDU's withdrawal aligns with its recent inclusion in the INDIA opposition bloc, as stated in a letter to the Governor, reiterating its stance against the BJP-led government. sources

Why Is It Suddenly Warmer in Delhi This Winter?

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 9.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, slightly above the seasonal average. Dr. Soma Sen Roy from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that a strong western disturbance and southerly winds contributed to the temperature increase. While temperatures across northern India may rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius, no further increase is expected in Delhi. A gradual decline in temperature is anticipated after January 24 as the disturbance moves away. Rainfall is forecasted for Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, and North Rajasthan today and tomorrow, while dense fog persists in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal, and Odisha. The air quality in Delhi remains poor, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 262 recorded at 9 am. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to reach around 24 degrees Celsius. sources
