boAT Founder Backs Piyush Goyal's Startups Jab Debate

Aman Gupta, co-founder of boAT, has expressed support for Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal amid backlash over his recent comments at the Startup Mahakumbh event, where he questioned the ambition of Indian startups focused on consumer apps. Gupta interpreted Goyal's remarks as a motivational call, emphasizing the need for Indian entrepreneurs to aim higher and compete globally, particularly in sectors like semiconductors and artificial intelligence. This perspective contrasts sharply with criticism from other entrepreneurs, such as Zepto's Aadit Palicha, who defended consumer internet startups for their job creation and economic impact. Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai and others called for government support rather than skepticism towards startups. Goyal, defending his statements, claimed they had been misinterpreted, while the Congress party accused him of undermining the government's pro-startup stance. sources

Kunal Kamra's Open Letter to BookMyShow: Please Ensure

Kunal Kamra, the stand-up comedian recently delisted from BookMyShow following controversy over his jokes targeting Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has penned an open letter requesting the ticketing platform to provide contact information of audiences from his shows. In his letter, posted on X, Kamra acknowledged the need for BookMyShow to maintain a good relationship with the state but emphasized the importance of artists having access to their audience data, especially since they incur significant advertising costs. LPG Cooking Gas Price Increased by Rs 50 per Cylinder

NEW DELHI: The price of cooking gas, or domestic LPG cylinders, has been raised by Rs 50, as announced by Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday. The new prices for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder will be Rs 550 for Ujwala scheme beneficiaries and Rs 853 for non-Ujwala users. This increase follows a recent reduction of Rs 41 in commercial LPG cylinder prices, benefiting restaurants and hotels. Additionally, the government has increased excise duties on petrol and diesel, with petrol now at Rs 13 per litre and diesel at Rs 10 per litre. However, this hike will not affect consumers, as it will be offset by reductions in retail prices due to falling international oil prices. The new excise duties will take effect on April 8, 2025, but consumers will see no change in fuel prices at the pump. sources

Fuel Excise Duty Increased by Rs 2/Litre, Prices Unchanged

The Indian government has increased excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre each, effective from April 8, 2025. However, retail prices will remain unchanged as this rise will be offset by reductions prompted by declining international oil prices. Current excise duties now stand at Rs 13 per litre for petrol and Rs 10 for diesel. The backdrop to this decision includes a significant drop in global oil prices, with Brent crude falling to its lowest since April 2021 amid escalating US-China trade tensions. India, which relies heavily on oil imports, has a history of adjusting excise duties in response to international price fluctuations. While previous increases have helped boost government revenues significantly, the current retail prices in Delhi are Rs 94.77 for petrol and Rs 87.67 for diesel. The Ministry of Petroleum confirmed that consumers will not face any immediate price hikes. sources

Driver Fired for Violations After Giving Water to Cheetahs

A driver at Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park has been dismissed after a viral video showed him offering water to a cheetah named Jwala and her four cubs, violating official guidelines. The incident raised concerns as it disregarded instructions meant to prevent human-cheetah conflicts. Jwala, part of a translocation initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Project Cheetah, approached the driver when he called her, leading to the cubs following suit. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Uttam Kumar Sharma, stated that the monitoring team is trained to keep a safe distance from the cheetahs, and only authorized personnel should interact closely with them. Currently, the park hosts 26 cheetahs, including 14 cubs born in India, following the translocation of eight Namibian cheetahs in September 2022 and 12 from South Africa in February 2023. sources

India's Unique Chance Amid Trump Tariffs

On April 2, 2023, US President Donald Trump implemented significant tariffs, igniting global market turmoil and prompting fears of economic disruption akin to the Great Depression. While many countries expressed outrage, few retaliated, with China already imposing a 34% tariff on US imports, targeting agricultural sectors that support Trump. The European Union remains divided on retaliation, as political instability in key countries like Germany and France has led to a cautious approach. Meanwhile, India, facing a $200 billion trade relationship with the US, is negotiating a bilateral trade agreement to mitigate the impact of new tariffs. Despite the upheaval, opportunities for cooperation, particularly in technology, persist, as the US seeks to maintain its global economic leadership while countering China's rise. The evolving landscape underscores the need for strategic partnerships, with India's population and technological capabilities seen as vital in addressing the China challenge. sources

Mamata Banerjee: No Teacher Dismissals While I'm Alive

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to protect the jobs of teachers whose appointments were annulled by a Supreme Court ruling, which found significant irregularities in the recruitment process of over 25,000 educators in 2016. Speaking at a rally in Kolkata, Banerjee criticized the court for not clarifying who qualifies as a "deserving" candidate, citing the all-India medical entrance exam NEET as a precedent where the entire examination was not cancelled despite allegations of malpractice. She accused the BJP and CPM of conspiring to undermine the state's education system and urged the Supreme Court for clarity, promising support for the affected teachers. The court's ruling highlighted issues like rank manipulation and the destruction of OMR sheets, leading to the conclusion that the selection process was irreparably compromised. While those not implicated will not have to refund salaries, their services will be terminated, and the state must conduct a new recruitment process within three months. sources
